Biography

Lionel Ashton was born on 20 January 1887 at Wakefield, near Nelson, the son of Francis Waterhouse and Martha Alice Currin.

Lionel was raised in Wakefield where his father worked as a storekeeper. He attended Wai-iti School but from 18 August to 17 December 1901 he was recorded as attending Nelson Central School. He left that school to start work. School records gave his date of birth as 20 January 1888 but Lionel was born in 1887 [birth registration].

Snippets taken from The Nelson Evening Mail provide a glimpse of Lionel's adult life -

17 October 1911, Pg 4 – Mr Ashton Waterhouse, storekeeper, of Upper Wakefield, writes our Wai-iti correspondent to-day, was the victim of a painful accident on Saturday last, while delivering goods in Pigeon Valley. It seems that Mr Waterhouse was getting up on to the express, when the horses moved on, causing him to fall, the front wheel of the heavily-laden express passing over an arm, breaking it in two places – above and below the elbow. The sufferer was conveyed to Dr. Pearless’s surgery for attention, and thence to his home, by Mr Francis Baigent, and is now doing as well as can be expected.

His father Francis Waterhouse died on 17 September 1914.

2 October 1914, Pg 4 – On the 29th September, ult., in the Supreme Court in Chambers, at Wellington, on the application of Mr C. J. Harley, His Honour Judge Hosking granted probate of the will of Francis Waterhouse, of Wakefield, storekeeper, deceased, to Martha Alice Waterhouse and Lionel Ashton Waterhouse, the executors named in the will.

1 October 1914, Pg 1 – ALL ACCOUNTS AGAINST the Estate of the late F. WATERHOUSE must be rendered during the ensuing month. L. A. WATERHOUSE.

5 May 1915, Pg 6 – WANTED, for a General Store, a Young Lady, with a knowledge of book-keeping preferred. Apply to L. A. Waterhouse, Wakefield.

17 April 1916, Pg 6 – THE EMPIRE’S CALL. The following registrations were received to day:- [List included] L. A. Waterhouse, storekeeper, Wakefield

16 Jun 1916, Pg 6 - EMPIRE’S CALL. NELSON ENLISTMENTS. The following registrations were received to-day:- [List included] L. A. Waterhouse, grocer, Wakefield.

[Note: Lionel's name was the only name repeated in the two lists quoted above.]

16 August 1916, Pg 6 – 20TH REINFORCEMENTS. MEN CALLED UP. The following for the Nelson quota of the 20th Reinforcements, have been called up, and leave for camp next Tuesday:- [Listed under Infantry] L. A. Waterhouse

14 October 1916, Pg 6 – ALL ACCOUNTS owing to L. A. Waterhouse must be settled by the 25th October, or else they will be sued for. L. A. WATERHOUSE.
