Biography

Susan Waterhouse was born in 1589 in the township of Skircoat within the ancient parish of Halifax, estimated from first marriage, and was baptized on 15 December 1589 at St John the Baptist, Halifax, WRY, England[1], the daughter of Isaac and Mary Waterhouse[2], sister of Anthony Waterhouse[3]

She mentions in her father's will dated 31st October, 1609 and it was proven 3rd October 1611. "To Isaac's five daughters, SUZAN, MARY, HELEN, GRACE and ELIZABETH, he left 1000 pounds each, to remain in the hands of his executors, they paying after the rate of 7 pounds 10s. per 100 pounds towards their education."[4]

Marriages

She married firstly to William Feney de Feney on 14 August 1610 at St John the Baptist, Halifax.[5]

(2nd) John Farrar.

Children

The children of John Farrer and Susan are recorded as follows, all born in Ewood in the township of Midgley within the ancient parish o Halifax.

  • William Farrer, Esq., of Eawood, a J.P. 30 years, died suddenly, 8 October, 1684.[6]
  • Edward Farrer, D.D., Fellow, 26 August, 1651, and Master of UniversityCollege, Oxford, 15 Feb., 1688. He died 13 Feb., 1698, buried in the College chapel.[6]
  • Susan Farrer, married to Mynheer Isaac Van osgarden, a Dutch merchant.[6]

Research Notes

She is listed as a daugther of Mr. Anthony Waterhouse, widow of Mr. William Fenay in Foster's pedigrees, which states that she is married John Farrer, of Eawood, Esq., J.P. 14 Car. I, 1639, and treasurer for lame soldiers in the West Riding, co. York. [6] and also same information in Thoresby's book.[7].
William Fenay, married Susan, daughter of Mr. Anthony Waterhouse; but died without issue. She survived her said husband, and afterwards married Mr. John Farrer, and by him had issue. William's wife was daughter of Anthony Waterhouse. Anthony was baptised 17th July, 1556, married Elizabeth, daughter of Daniel Foxcroft, of Halifax (doubtless some connection of Wm. Fenay's mother, Grace Foxcroft). He died 20th July, 1627, and had two sons, who died young, and five daughters who all married.[8] Further research is needed.
