Richard was christened at Tenterden on 2nd May 1836. He lived with his parents at Knockwood, Tenterden (or at Upper Huntbourne nearby) until his marriage to Mary Ann Blackman at Tenterden in 1865. (She was christened at Appledore, Kent, on 2nd November 1834, daughter of John Blackman and Sarah Spilsted who were married at Stone in Oxney on 13th March 1828.) After his marriage they evidently lived at Sellindge for a while, and we know this because their first child was born there in 1866. The second child was born in 1868 and the third and last in 1870, both at Maidstone. Richard is described in the 1871 census simply as " Land owner", but he was evidently more than that, because there were numerous notices published in the 'Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser' during 1869 referring to "Mr. Richard Waterman, Auctioneer, Valuer, House and Estate Agent, 14, Ashford road, Maidstone, Monthly sales held in the Cattle Market......." . The next two Maidstone censuses, at Albion Place in 1881 and at Sittingbourne Road (which is where Albion Place is) in 1891, describe him as 'Auctioneer and Valuer'. He died there at the end of 1896 aged 60. Both his sons continued as auctioneers, living in different parts of Maidstone. Mary Ann continued to live at Albion Place with her daughter Kate Priscilla, dying in 1918. His children were: Albert James 1866 - 1907, Edward John 1868 - 1952, Kate Priscilla 1870 - 1962.
