Biography

Joseph Waterman was born in 1649, based on his gravestone, in Marshfield, Plymouth Colony. His parents were Robert and Elizabeth (Bourne) Waterman[1]. (The Marshfield records are incorrect, giving his birth year as 1639).

Joseph's father Robert died in 1652. His mother Elizabeth remarried the next year, to Thomas Tilden, and had one surviving child by him, a daughter Lydia. Elizabeth died in 1663, and Thomas married, second, Mary Holmes. Joseph would later raise Lydia's son Joseph as part of his family.[1] Joseph and his two brothers were put under the guardianship of his uncle Josiah Winslow, and of Anthony Snow, whose daughter he would later marry.[2]

Joseph referred to himself as a "house carpenter" and "yeoman" in deeds. He acted in various town capacities: selectman, surveyor, several juries, and constable. In 1673 he volunteered as one of four troopers that the General Court ordered raised from Marshfield.[1]

Joseph married Sarah Snow, daughter of Anthony and Abigail (Warren) Snow, and granddaughter of Richard Warren of the Mayflower, by about 1673[3]

Joseph and Sarah had children[1][4]:

  1. Sarah (1674-1758), married Solomon Hewitt
  2. Joseph (1676/7-1715), married Lusannah Snow
  3. Elizabeth (1679-1708), married Ichabod Bartlett
  4. Abigail (1681-1729), married Kenelm Winslow
  5. Anthony (1684-1715), married Elizabeth Arnold
  6. Bethia (1687-1746), married Samuel Doggett
  7. Lydia (1689/90-1750), married John Thomas

Joseph wrote his will on 6 August 1709, and he died 3 January 1710/11 "aged 62". His inventory was taken on 16 February 1710/11 in Marshfield.[5], and the will was proved 12 March 1710/11. He mentions wife Sarah, sons Joseph and Anthony, Joseph Ryder "my sister's son which I have brought up", son Joseph Waterman and Kenelm Winslow, daughters Sarah Hewitt, Elizabeth Bartlett deceased, Abigail Winslow, Bethia and Lidia, and Mary Okesman "which I have brought up".[1][6] The entire will and some additional background are printed in The Mayflower Descendant 24:4', pages 145-149.[7]

Joseph has a Find A Grave: Memorial #20902180. His headstone reads:

(illegible) 1711
