Josiah was born third of eleven children to Thomas and Mary Beal Waterman in early 1735 in Hingham, Massachusetts. His exact birth date is unknown but he was baptized on February 23, 1735 and typical Congregational christening practices of the time would indicate a birth between February 15 and February 21. It appears from his uncle Josiah's Will that Josiah was actually raised and considered nearly a son by this uncle; "to cousin Josiah, whom I brought up, and who now lives with me, all my houses, barns, homestead and lands in Weymouth, Hingham, Hull or Abington". This is most likely the reason he is given the suffix "junior" in many records even though his father's name was Thomas.
Josiah married Thankful Humphrey on January 17, 1758 in Weymouth, Massachusetts. The couple resided in that town and records indicate they had seven children.
Josiah served during the American Revolution as a Private from MA, under Capts Asa White, Samuel Ward, and Col Solomon Lovell of the 2nd Regt MA.[1]
Josiah died in Weymouth on January 16, 1795 about one month shy of his sixtieth birthday.
