Richard Waters migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640). (See The Directory, by R. C. Anderson, p. 361) Join: Puritan Great Migration Project Discuss: pgm
[Note: Sidney Perley and others assumed that among the 5 household members of Richard in 1637 included Sarah Waters who married Joshua Rea/Ray in 1651 and died in 1700. She is not mentioned in his will and there isn't evidence to support Sarah as their child.]
[Note: Birth order: It is unknown which child was baptized in November, 1640, although some early texts attribute that baptism to son John. The births/baptisms of James, John, Mary and Martha have not been found]
Richard Waters, was born in London son of James and Phebe (Manning) Waters, and was baptized at St Botolph's on 3 March 1604 recorded in the St Botolph, Aldgate Parish Register. [1][2][3][4]
His father James died in February 1617, and divided his estate into thirds, one third going to his wife Phebe, one third going to son Richard, and the remainder to various legacies including his partner, the church parson and the poor. [3]
After his father's death, his mother Phebe was published to marry William Plasse at St. Buttolph, Aldgate, London in February, 1617/18. [4][5][3]
In London records, he is styled 'ironmonger' and 'distiller'. The trade of his father William Plasse was a gunsmith, and Richard followed the trade of his stepfather. [5][6][3]
Richard married Rejoice/Joyce (___) , likely in London. [4] In Salem documents, Richard Waters is called son-in-law to William Plasse, and he termed his stepfather as his father-in-law [3] which has caused confusion in early sources in attaching his step-father as the father of his wife Rejoice. Her parentage is unknown. [4]
Richard and his family likely came to Salem, Massachusetts in 1636, with his stepfather and mother, William and Phebe Plasse. [5][3][4]
1637: December 25: Richard received land grants at Salem, Massachusetts. His household consisted of 5 family members. [4]
1663 -1668: Richard Waters licensed by the Salem Court to distill and sell strong waters at retail. [7]
1669: April 9: A lot in Salem was conveyed to Richard Waters, gunsmith by Robert Follett. [4]
1671: June 7: Richard conveyed part of his homestead to daughters Abigail, wife of William Punchard. [4]
1671: July 2: He conveyed a portion of his homestead to daughter Mary, wife of Clement English. [4]
1671: October 24: Richard conveyed part of the house he was building to son Ezekiel for the services he had provided to his parents. [4]
1675: October 26: He conveyed a final portion on the homestead to daughter Hannah, wife of Joseph Striker. [4]
Richard died in the summer of 1676. [5] His will was dated July 16, 1676 and proved on November 28, 1677. [3] In it he names:
wife Joyce, sole executrix
to son William, what remains of my estate after my wife's death, to be secured for William by son Ezekiel
sons James, John, Ezekiel and daughter Martha 10s each
daughters Abigail Punchard, Mary English, Susanna Pulsiver and Hannah Striker [4][8]
It is unknown when widow Joyce Waters died but on October 20, 1687 she deeded the remainder of the estate to son Ezekiel. [4]
