Obituary

Tumbarumba.[2]

On Saturday morning news was received at the police station that Mr. Joseph Waters, the esteemed proprietor of the ayside Hotel at Bago, had died very suddenly. Dr. Johnston was taken to the hotel by Senior-constable Hely, when a post-mortem examination was held on the body. The verdict recorded was that death had ensued from fatty degeneration of the heart. Mr. Waters was about 70 years of age, and had spent the greater portion of his fairly long life at Bago, where he kept the old hostelry known as the Laurel ill Hotel, on the road between Adelong and here. This hotel has been the means of saving the life of many a poor traveller coming thither from Adelong, Tumut and the surrounding towns. During the winter season it becomes almost impossible for travellers (excepting those very well acquainted with the road) to get nearer than Bago to Tumbarumba in a day's journey, owing to the vast amount of snow which covers the heights for several months in the year, and with a cheery word of welcome Mr. Waters ever stood ready to greet the unfortunate traveller, caring little whether the money for the necessary accommodation was forthcoming or not.

The funeral took place on Sunday, and was very largely attended. He leaves a wife and a large family to mourn their loss.
