Biography

Matthew was born about 1838; his parents are Jane and John Waters (a shoemaker) of Barnoldby Le Beck, Caistor, Lincolnshire. ^[1] The 1851 census of Barnoldby Le Beck lists his family, but reveals that Matthew is already away from home; he is working as a house servant for John Grantham, a farmer in nearby Hatcliff, Caistor, Lincolnshire. ^[2]

He married Maria Hill in the parish of Cuxwold, Lincolnshire, England on the 17th May 1864. ^[3]
