Biography

Alice (also spelled Elles) was born in 1756, a daughter of Samuel Waters and Hopestill Hamlin.^[1][2]

Alice's father was of European descent; her mother may have been a person of color, as the 1790 and 1800 census records for Alice's second husband show only free persons of color.

She married twice. 1. James Shott (a Native American who died of smallpox while serving in the Continental Army. 2. Gideon Quash (of African descent)

Alice was the mother of at least three children: Lovice, James, and Polly.

She passed away after 1820 and before Gideon remarried in 1829.
