Biography

In moving to Georgia, Mitchell Watkins was an early participant in what is known as the "Great Migration" in American history. This movement was composed of persons who migrated westward and southwestward during the early part of the 19th century. A noted southern historian (Clement Eaton, A History of' the Old South (Second Edition), New York, The Macmillan Co., 1952-) P. 210.wrote: One reason for the Great Migration was the crushing defeat of the Creeks by General Andrew Jackson in 1814 and the large land cessions extorted from them. The advance guard of this forward movement to the rich lands of the Southwest was formed by pioneer farmers who build their homes and cleared their lands by the process of girdling.... There was a tendency for groups to settle this new country, a group of neighbors, a congregation, or a large family and its relatives.

While the family trees support Penny Coleman as Mitchell Watkins' spouse, Charles Watkins discovered that Penny Coleman was the wife of Mitchell's nephew, and that he instead was married to 2 sisters named Lodge and a third wife, Elizabeth Hill (daughter of Isaac Hill and Lucinda Wallace).[1] This hand-written addition to Mr. Watkins' paper is attributed to a June 11, 1891 letter from Patrick Shepherd in a book Letters of Macon Warthen on file in the Archives, Atlanta. The letter states that his first five children, including "Wealthy," who married a Fountain, were the daughters of the two Lodge sisters, and his last six children were the children of Elizabeth Hill. The letter also mentions that "Mitchell Watkins was a Revolutionary soldier under the command of the chivalrous Gen. Green."[1]
