Mary Ann "Polly" Watkins was born in August of 1842 to Andrew David"Watkins and Sarah Ann (Presley) Watkins. She is listed with her parents on both the 1860 Census in Jackson, North Carolina and the 1870 Census in the Qualla area of Jackson, North Carolina (she was the oldest out of thirteen children born to David and Sarah Watkins). On September 5, 1878 she married John Kirkland in Charleston Township, Swain, North Carolina. They are listed together in the following US censuses:

1900 census (in Charleston Township (part south of river), Swain, North Carolina with eight children listed)
1910 Census (with one son listed in their household in Cane Hill Township, Washington, Arkansas)
1920 Census (in Washington, Arkansas with one son listed in their household)
Based on the data provided in the census reports; it is believed that they had nine children before she passed away in 1930 at the age of 88 in Washington County, Arkansas. She is buried in Tharp Cemetery in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas.
