William Watkins came free to the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)
, arriving with his parents and sister on the Robert Small in Sep 1863[3].
When William was a boy in Warrandyte[4], he trained a Magpie to sit up on a branch, and call "Whoa boy", when bullock teams were trying to cross the river. The reason why this was done, was because the bullock teams needed to get speed up, to get across the river, and out the other side up the muddy banks. If the bullock teams stopped in the river, they would not be able to get out of the river, because of the slippery banks. So, this Magpie, which William Henry had trained, would stop the bullocks from getting across the Yarra river at Warrandyte.
When William was about 14, an incident was reported in the paper, which probably was mentioning this William:
STRANGE SUICIDE. A Man Hangs Himself Because He Can't Pay His Debts. On Sunday last a lad named William Henry Watkins, as he was passing along the road near St. John's Church at Diamond Creek, saw a man hanging from a tree not far off from the thoroughfare. He gave information, and some neighbors went out and cut down the body, which was suspended by the neck by means of a rope made fast to a limb of a box tree. The body was quite cold and dead. (Article continues)[5]
A local paper reported on the Warrandyte Variety Troup, who performed at different locations, beginning at Warrandyte. William was part of the group, and so were some of the Manning family:
WARRANDYTE MECHANICS' INSTITUTE. THE WARRANDYTE VARIETY TROUPE'S INITIAL PERFORMANCE. It is always a very great pleasure to cordially endorse and encourage anything that tends to give legitimate entertainment and amusement. The Warrandyte Variety Troupe, composed of several respectable young amateurs fond of music, singing, etc., and anxious for self-improvement, determined to give a series of entertainments, and their initial performance (in aid of the Warrandyte Mechanics' Institute), which took place last Friday evening, although the result of but few rehearsals, fully warranted their action. The troupe, consisting of Messrs. W., A. J., and J. A. Manning, W. Watkins, A. Livingston, C. Rose, and George Treadwell, were introduced to the audience by Mr. C. A. Blair, who, in a few well chosen words, thanked them and the public for their patronage in supporting such a good cause. The whole of the troupe possess voices considerably above the average, and in spite of the poor acoustic properties of the Hall, the songs went off in, first-class style. With everything running on so evenly it is hardly necessary to particularize. Mr. G. Treadwell, although young in years, is evidently old in piano playing, and with Mr. C. Rose on the violin, gave great satisfaction ; his overture in the second part being a brilliant performance. Nearly the whole of the songs were new to the place. The coster song, "Round the Town" (in character), by Messrs. W. and J. Manning, was rather an innovation, and was heartily cheered. Mr. S. Graham's clog-dance brought a hearty encore and was followed by an Irish jig. As the troupe intend give a series of entertainments in the district we can safely recommend those who wish to spend a pleasant evening to patronise them. The following is the programme :--Minstrel portion. --Bones, Mr. W. Watkins; Tambo, Mr. W. Manning ; Interlocutor, M. A. J. Manning; violin, Mr. C. Rose; pianist, Mr. G. Treadwell; Messrs. J. A. Manning and A. Livingston. Overture, Troupe; opening chorns, "Climb Up, Ye Children," Mr. W. Manning and Troupe; "Old Folks at Home," Mr A. J. Livingston; " Queen of the Earth," Mr. J. Manning; "Tan-Tan like a Fairy," W. Manning; "Anchored," Mr. Geo. Treadwell; "Willing Chap," Mr. W. Watkins. The ordinary side business and jokes were quite up to the mark. Second Part.--Overture (piano), Mr. Geo. Treadwell; song, " Come Down by the Gale," Mr. W. Watkins; Coster Song, "Round the Town," Messrs. W. and J. Manning; "Conquer or Die," Mr. A. Livingston; clog-dance, Mr. S. Graham; "Enniscorty," Mr. W. Manning; "Remember Me No More," J. Manning; "I'm in the Clair," Mr. G. Treadwell, accompanied by Messrs. W. Brown and C. Rose. The Farce.--"Grandmother's Ghost." "Aunt Chloe," Mr. A. Livingston; "Jim," Mr. W. Manning; "Sam," Mr. A. J. Manning; "Hurry," Mr. W. Watkins. This was very creditably played, and caused considerable amusement. The ball was well attended.[7][8]
He died in 1931[9], and was buried at Brighton Cemetery[10].
Death and Funeral notices were placed in papers after William's death:

↑Inconsistent Middle Name, Apparently it was known within the family that William spelt his middle name as Henery. I have not seen any sources thus far that support this. If a birth or baptismal entry can be shown, that the UK Index is wrong, then the spelling of this name should be changed.

An examination was held in the estate of John Needham, of Fitzroy, contractor, Mr. Godfrey appearing for the assignee. John Needham, the insolvent, examined, said that on the 10th January last he bought £250 worth of goods from Moton Moss. He bought them conjointly with Charles Brunton, and they consisted of tea, drapery, &c. They were put into a store hired from Rushall, in which insolvent also had two pianos, a harmonium, and some carpets. Some of the goods were offered for sale at auction by Rushall, but were not sold, because the prices offered were not satisfactory. About a month after the 10th January, the goods were sold to Watkins, jun., for £316. Watkins, jun. gave him a cheque for £316, which he gave to Watkins's father. His (witness's) household furniture, worth £30 or £40, was sold by auction by Rushall, who paid him by a cheque, and he gave that to Watkins, sen., to stop a writ he had against him for £530 which he owed him. Watkins, jun., had no particular business. Thought he had sold goods to Watkins, jun., before, but never had a transaction like that with him. Did not think he had ever sold him goods to the amount of £10 before. Watkins, sen., had issued a writ against him, and he therefore went to Watkins, jun., and told him he would sell him the goods in the store to prevent the execution of his father's writ. He (witness) was indebted to the Australian and European Bank to the extent of £680. Watkins, sen., was guarantee for him to the amount of £300 Waa indebted to Watkins, sen., in January last, but could not say how much. On the 21st January he gave Watkins two promissory notes for £550 each, and on the same day got him to guarantee him to the extent of £300. He saw Watkins, sen., before he saw the son in regard to the sale of the goods. Told Watkins, sen., that Moss would not renew the bill he had given for the goods, and that he was in a difficulty. Watkins then said he should go for his money, and witness himself suggested that Watkins should realise on whatever witness had, and stop execution. In consequence of what Watkins further said, he went to Watkins's son, and sold him the goods. Watkins, sen., had, he believed, issued the writ before he went to him about selling the goods. William Henry Watkins, examined, said he had been an hotelkeeper and circus proprietor. For the last 12 months he had been speculating in buying and selling. He and insolvent went partners in buying building material, and had five or six transactions together in that line. Bought goods which the insolvent had referred to from him to the extent of £316. His father told him if he saw anything cheap which the insolvent had, to buy it, and he would assist him. If he bought anything from the insolvent he was to give him a cheque to meet it with. When he had purchased the goods he put them into a shop in Gertrude-street and tried to sell them privately, but as he could not get his price for them there, he sent them to Taylor's auction rooms, and he had lost on what he had sold. He received about £100 on them. Never purchased goods of that kind from insoIvent before. The examination then closed, and the insolvent was ordered to file an account of his transactions with Watkins, sen., for six months before insolvency.<r_f>Law Report, Trove.nla.gov.au, The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.: 1848-1957), Sat 18 May 1878, Page 10, LAW REPORT. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/5932936?searchTerm=%22William%20henry%20watkins%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc|||l-state=Victoria</r_f>
