Biography

George was born about 1847. He is the son of George Watkins and Melinda Walker.

George and Mary E. Watkins married when she was 16 - the 1910 Census notes they had been married 33 years, having had six children/four living.[1] The 1900 Census says they'd been married for 22 years and shows their birth dates as April 1846 (George) and 1861 for Mary (looks more like Nov than Mar).[2]

Children (three sons and a daughter living in 1910, all born in Tennessee; ages as of 1910 Census, birth dates from 1900 Census):[1][2]
  1. Edgar Watkins, born July 1881[3] / Robt E Watkins (28),[1] died 7 November 1958.[4]
  2. Mayfield Watkins, born November 1883[5] / Wm M Watkins (26)[1]
  3. Len F Watkins (24),[1][6] born August 1884.[2]
  4. Lucete E Watkins (18)[1] / Lucile, born August 1891.[7]

Research Notes

Information supplied by R.E. Watkins of Nashville for the death certificate of George Walker Watkins (died 3 January 1923 in Tennessee; buried at Springhill Cemetery) says he was a widower, born 7 August 1849 and was the son of James W. Watkins.[8]

The 1880 Census shows George and Mary's household as including his father, a sister and a cousin:[9]

George W Watkins, Self (32) and Mary, Wife (17)
  • George P Watkins, Father (76, born Virginia)
  • Virginia Watkins, Sister (41, born Tennessee)
  • Rocena Walker, Cousin (Female) (23, born Tennessee)
of interest - Father's status is noted as "Single" (instead of Widowed).[9]

  5. Mayfield: Transcribed as 17 in 1900 Census (son), but image has age 16; not in household in 1910 census. He is most likely the same son as 1910's Wm M Watkins. (See note for Len/Lew.)
  6. Lew (Len): 1900 Census transcribes his name as Lew. Looking at the 1910 Census image, it could be "Lou"; likewise, looking at the 1900 Census image, it could be Len. The 1900 Census transcription says he is 16; the image says 15.
  7. Lucile: Transcribed as Lucile (age 9) in 1900 Census; image shows age as 8.

new wrinkle - Mary Elizabeth (Knight) Watkins is shown as a widow in her death certificate, which says she died 21 April 1913. The death certificate for George Walker Watkins says he's a widow too. They can't have predeceased each other. I was willing to accept the conclusion (stated on George's FindAGrave memorial) that the reporter of his information was incorrect (saying he was born 1849 and son of James W Watkins, when census data supports his birth as 1846 and his father as George P Watkins), but... if Mary Elizabeth (Knight) Watkins was his wife, and he died 1923, she was not a widow when she died.
