Sarah was born about 1869 in Massachusetts. Her parents were born in Maryland.[1]
Though she was born after he gave his life in the Civil War for the freedom of all, she may have been the sister or half-sister of Joseph R. Campbell of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during that war. Both were raised by Susan Watkins.
In 1880, she is attending school in or near New Bedford, Massachusetts.
