Richard was born in 1874, the oldest of four children. He was the son of William Watkins and Victoria Massie. His marriage to Ada Ralph produced four children. His World War I draft registration described him as tall, stout, blue eyes, and light colored hair. Before his death, his daughter Elizabeth married and Richard was able to see and hold his first grandchild. He passed away in 1923, struck by lightning which went through an open barn. Left to mourn him were his wife, two sons, two daughters, a son-in-law, granddaughter, brother and sister.
His tombstone shows him born in 1873; however, the 1900 census, his WWI draft registration which he signed, and his death certificate (information supplied by his brother) shows 1874. Because the tombstone was erected later than these documents, 1874 is listed as his birth year.
