Biography

James was born in 1878. He was the son of William Watkins and Victoria Massie. His middle name of Victoria was recorded in a Martin Funeral Home Record in Whitesville, Daviess County, Kentucky and told as such in the family. The census records from 1900 through 1930 indicated that he could read and write. The 1940 census showed that he had completed 8th grade. Yet the WWI draft registration card showed an "X" close to the signature of James V Watkins and Vanover as the middle name on the form. The WWII draft registration card showed "his mark X" and only the initial V for his middle name. There is no explanation for Vanover as middle name.

Neither Jim nor his sister married. They lived in the same house in the Boston area of Daviess County, Kentucky, where their mother and father had lived. When his sister died, he continued to live there, renting out the bottom level of the house.

He passed away in 1972 in a nursing home in Ohio County, Kentucky.
