Family history - Abraham Watson floated cattle & stove bolts down the Mississippi River to New Orleans to sell. He was a doctor and made a speech to the Nat. Medical Society in New Orleans. The homestead 153 acres of land in Waidsboro Kentucky in 1831, he came with his family to Old Lewisburg Arkansas in 1860 by via the rivers. He owned 155 acres of land 8 miles east of Conway in Faulkner County, where he lived with his family until his death about 1873 Sept. 20. He gave the plot of ground for the Old Liberty Church & Cemetery. He is buried in New Liberty Cemetery beside his wife, Nancy. Mr. Watson bought the land from a man named Wilson. Mr. Watson was of English descent with some Indian blood. Mr. Watson built a better log cabin house out of cypress logs given to him by a widow Art or Ark at Art's Pond in the year 1860-61. He cut & hauled them to his home 8 miles east of Conway. Henry Watson then about 4 or 5 years old and a brother walked from home down to Ark Pond where Mr. Watson was working and took their lunch to them. Ark Pond was 4 or 5 miles away. In 1863 some northern soldiers, sick with measles, stopped at Mr. Watson's & stayed several days till they got well. They made beds down on the floor of the big living room which was about 20 by 22 feet. When they left they took Ma Watson's wagon & team of mules; but told him he could get them back by coming to Lewisburg after them where they went on via the river. He went there & brought them back." According' to Family Lore" 10/2000 EHW.

"Abraham came from Kentucky after believing he accidentally killed his brother in a fist fight. Abraham was a medical doctor. He left in a great hurry and left property in Kentucky. Some think it was in Lexington. The brother was injured but survived. They came via the Arkansas river and settled in Liberty (outside Conway) about 30 miles from the river. For several years, Abraham continued to send money to a relative to pay taxes on this real estate, only to learn later that the relative never paid the taxes and the land was lost, sold for back taxes. Lilly was his granddaughter in-law. She reported this information to her daughter, Hazel May."

"Abraham's son and daughter homesteaded land which his son Byron Augustus Watson lived on with his family until some time in the 1930's when Byron moved his family to England, Arkansas. Byron later moved back to the homestead land in the 1960's along with his son Vollie."

The first permanent settlement was built in 1820 by Banester Wade and called Wadesboro, which served as the county seat from 1822 to 1842. In 1842 Marshall County was created out of Calloway. In the 1840s, some residents moved westward into Missouri and beyond. Calloway County residents were strongly sympathetic to the Southern cause during the Civil War. About eight hundred joined the Confederate army, about two hundred the Union forces

The Jackson Purchase region of KY was acquired under the Oct. 19, 1818 Land Treaty between the US and the Chickasaw Indian Nation. On Feb. 14, 1820 the KY General Assembly passed legislation that estab. a public land system mapping the Jackson Purchase. Non-military tracts were sold by quarter sections, overseen by Receivers in Waidesborough (Wadesboro) & Princeton. Formation of Kentucky County, Virginia

In 1777 Fincastle County, Virginia's General Assembly divided Fincastle County into three parts and created Washington, Montgomery, and Kentucky Counties. The act creating these counties described Kentucky County as being "to the south and westward of a line beginning on the Ohio at the mouth of Great Sandy creek and running up the same and the main, or northeasterly, branch thereof to the Great Laurel Ridge of Cumberland Mountain, then south westerly along the said mountain to the line of North Carolina.".

1780, Kentucky County was divided into three counties -- Jefferson, Fayette, and Lincoln. Within just a few years, six more counties had been carved out of those three. Between 1784 and 1792, people living in those counties held ten conventions on the question of statehood; on 18 December 1789 Virginia's General Assembly passed an act allowing Kentucky to apply for statehood and on 1 June 1792, those nine counties became a state, with the full consent of Virginia.

Message seems to put the squelch on Watsons from Nelson Co., Kentucky

Well I really have to study this and your webite. I opened up Abraham.

Your information matches very little of our documented info. I am not sure if you have mixed two families or if your generations are mixed.

Henry Watson I married Sarah unknown. We do not know where he is actually from. His son Henry II married Mary Ann Rhodes and two other of Basil's daughters married Watsons. Now Basil was in Loudon Co., Va and signed the Louson proclamation or whatever it was called. There was a Watson there and his son married one of Basil's daughters in Nelson Co., Ky. The other Watsons were not in the same family. I have always thought that there was some kind of relationship but we never found it. Basil came from St. Mary's Conty, Md. Watson I was granted land and was declared too poor to pay for it. Henry II was the father of an Abraham who was my great grandfather. Abraham was born 1815 in Indiana and married Matilda Hobbs. He left Ind for Illnois and then to Mo. Henry II and Mary Ann also went with him. In 1847 they all reached Hunt Co., Tx with the Mercer Colony. Mary Ann was not on the 1850 census so died on the way or shortly after arriving in Texas because Henry got 640 acres which you had to be married to get. Henry II was born in Pa in 1777 according to all his census reports.

Abraham and Matilda left Texas for Benton Co., Ark after 1870 and the Civil War. He was the first postmaster at Gravette Ark. Henry probably died before they left Tx. Abraham and his oldest son William did fight in the Civil War for a short period.

Henry I supposedly came to Ky by raft down the Ohio according to one cousin. He fought with George Rogers Clark in 1780 in Rev.

Dortha 2007.

He moved to Loudoun Co., Va. by 1774 when he signed the Loudoun County Virginia Resolution. He married (1st) ca. 1779 Sarah (Lee) Thomas [ancestry unknown] in Loudoun Co., Va. They lived there until about 1793, at which time they moved to Montgomery Co., Md where his family lived a few years. By ca. 1800, however, he resided in Nelson Co., Ky. Sarah died between 1800-1810. He married (2nd) ca.1812 in Nelson Co., Ky., Nancy Ann Middleton. Basil and Ann were divorced in 1815. Basil died there in 1828.

Re: Abraham Watson KY to AR m. Claunch sisters.

I believe the Claunch sisters that we have always heard about from tradition were not actually Claunches. They were actually Fulgham's. Nancy was married to a man named John Claunch when the two families moved to Arkansas. When John Claunch died, and Sarah also died, she married Abraham. I guess that is where the Claunch came in. My Aunt says that she remembers hearing the name Fulgham when she was young, but she never knew the kinship.

Sarah and Nancy's parents were Anthony and Rebecca Fulgham. Anthony was born about 1794 in North Carolina and is in the 1840 Census living close to the Watsons, who was married to his first wife, I presume since there was a woman and young children in his household during this time. John Claunch was also married at the time of the 1840 census and living in the area. He had one small child at the time of the 1840 Census.

Anthony died before 1850 and Rebecca is listed as head of household in that census along with several children including Nancy and Sarah. Abraham's wife had also died and he is living as a widower with his children, and also with an elderly woman, whom I believe to be his first wife's mother, Emily Sutton, 62, and some children with the last name of Austin (don't know how they fit in).

By 1860, Sarah was married to Abraham, Nancy married to John Claunch, and Rebecca Fulgham is living with her daughter Nancy Claunch in Arkansas, along with the Claunch children from his first marriage, and some of Nancy's sisters. As you probably know, Mary (Polly) Watson married a Cook and stayed in Kentucky. Emily Sutton is found in her household in the 1860 Census. The Cook's were living next door to a Josephine Watson (I haven't quite placed her yet) and 2 doors down from James Fulgham, one of Nancy and Sarah's brothers. John Claunch and family were living in Arkansas along with the Abraham Watson family.

There is information on the internet about Anthony Fulgham's family that is very interesting. You might do a look up on it if you want more about them.

Abraham Watson was born 1810, in Wadesboro, Calloway county, Kentucky. According to his Find A Grave memorial, Abraham was married three times. [7]

Abraham was married around 1830, in Kentucky to his first wife, and mother of seven children. Her name is accepted to be Mary Sutton. Children of Abraham and Mary include:

1. Mary A. Watson (1833 Ballard, KY - 1913 Carlisle, KY) m. Sebron Cook (1825-1899)

2. America Watson (ca. 1834 Calloway, KY - ?)

3. Moses P. Watson (1836 Calloway, KY - aft 1860 ?) m. Laura Ann Gurley (1840-?)

4. Charles Watson (ca. 1838 Graves or Kickman, KY - aft. 1870 AR) m. Laura

5. Martha America Watson ( 07 Apr 1840 Graves, KY - 18 Sep 1921 Conway, Faulkner, AR) m. Jessie J. Timmons (1832-1904)

6. Narcissa Watson (1846 Hickman or Ballard, KY - aft. 1910 TX) m. James Lewis Gurley (1819-1870)

7. Andrew Jackson Watson (1848-1849 Hickman or Ballard, KY - 20 Nov 1866 AR)

Abraham married secondly, between 1851 and 1853, in Ballard Kentucky, Sarah Fulgham, also mother of seven children. Children of Abraham and Sarah are:

8. Annie Watson (ca. 1852 Ballard, KY - ? St Charles, Arkansas, AR)

9. Jane E. Watson (06 Oct 1852 Ballard, KY - ?)

10. George Henry Watson (1856 Ballard, KY - 1935 AR)

11. John W. Watson (1857 Ballard, KY - ? AR)

12. Marion Watson (1861 Conway, Faulkner, AR- aft. 1900 ?) m. Rachel Downs (1858-?)

13. William Watson (ca. 1865 Conway, Faulkner, AR - ?)

14. Sarah Watson (ca. 1868 AR - ?)

Abraham and Sarah are found on the United States Census of 1860, living in Welborn Township, Conway, Arkansas. His birth year is estimated as 1812, but because his Find A Grave memorial states 1810, that year of birth is being used. Living with them are Moses P Watson, Charles Watson, Martha A. Watson, Narcissa Watson, and Andy J. Watson, from his first marriage, as well as Ann, Henry and John from his second marriage. Jane may have died young and the rest of the children were born after 1860. [8]

Abraham married thirdly, between 1868 and 1870, in Falkner, Arkansas, Nancy G. Fulgham. There were no children of this marriage.
