Biography

Susan was born about 1842 in Russell County, Alabama. She is the daughter of William Watson and Eleanor Shockley. She was married to Thomas J. Weaver in Russell County in 1858. In 1860 her brother George married the sister of Thomas. Both men went off to war with the 45th Alabama during the War between the states. Her husband was captured at Dallas, Georgia in 1864 and sent to a POW camp at Rock Island, Illinois. He was paroled and sent to CIty Point, Virginia and then exchanged. He was furloughed in March of 1865 before the surrender of Lee's army. Thomas returned home. Susan and Thomas tried to return to their lives after the separation and hardship of the conflict. They now had to endure the years of the Reconstruction.

Susan and Thomas were living in Opelika, Lee County, Alabama in 1880. Susan and Thomas moved to Columbus, Georgia by 1888. Thomas is recorded on the Columbus City Directory living at 1722 1st Avenue. Susan and Thomas were still at the same address in 1891-92. Thomas died some time before 1896 and Susan was living at 14th and Linwood in Columbus with her daughter Carrie on the Columbus City Directory for 1896-97. She was still living with her daughter in 1900 at 1405 10th Avenue in Columbus. Carrie was married about 1896 to Horace Ridings. They both worked at the Swift Textile Mills. Susan was living with her daughter Carrie and her husband in 1910 in the same location. Susan died in 1915 and was buried in Phenix City, Alabama across the Chattahoochee RIver from Columbus. Susan and Thomas had six children and all of them were still living in 1900. By 1910 there were only three still living.
