Biography

This profile is part of the Harlem Township, Illinois One Place Study.

Hiram was born in 1802 in New York. He was the son of William Wattles and Eunice Newhauser.

He married Sarah “Sally” Doolittle about 1824.

They came west in 1835. They were the first to settle in Harlem Township, Winnebago County.

Hiram called the area “Scipio” and staked our lots, hoping to sell lots. Neither the name or his development took off. [1]

By 1857 he had moved on to Faribault, Minnesota. [2]

He passed away in 1878 in Seward County, Nebraska.
