Re JOHN WAUGH / HOGG - Dob 1847

John Waugh is first found in the Reg Birth Index April 1847 as John Edward Waugh, Dumfries

In the 1851 Census he is shown as the step son of Andrew Hogg and Jannet Borthwick (married 2nd June 1850) with his sister Robina Dob 1844.

By the 1861 Census - John Waugh is now shown as John Hogg (aged 13) so assume John has taken his step fathers name, but Robina is not on the Census and would be 17, but another Robina is listed aged less than 1yr, which makes you assume Robina (1844) has passed away as I cannot find any other records for her. Unfortunately, there is also a death registration for a Robina in 1861.

Using several search sources I have been unable to find any details of a birth certificate to prove who John Waugh’s parents were.

As the birth registration was shown as Dumfries decided to try ‘Scotlands people’, and search for paternity within the Kirk Sessions for 1847. Going page by page found an entry on the 26th February 1847, between a Jannet Borthwick and a John Waugh, where the said John Waugh admitted he was the father to her second child, and the court order he pay compensation. Below is transcript or as close as.

“Jannet Borthwick residing in Queensberry Street, Dumfries appeared and acknowledged that she is pregnant in (unknown) and accused John Waugh (unknown but probably profession Seaman ?) Dumfries as the father of it. He admitted that this is her second child in (unknown). Signed Jannet Borthwick She was cited (unknown unknown) and the office as appointed to cite the said John Waugh to compensate her.”

The full record can be found in Virtual Volume for Dumfries reference CH2/537/16 Page 274 - Dumfries Kirk Session Minutes 26th February 1847.

On Johns marriage certificate his father was named as Andrew, a joiner.

It was then possible to cross-reference census records to identify the correct family, who had moved from Dumfriesshire, Scotland to Liverpool, England.

1851 census records John's name as John "Waugh" the step-son of Andrew Hogg . He must have later taken his step-father's name, Hogg. The 1851 census has his place of birth as Dumfries, Dumfriesshire and his age as 4 so he was born around 1847.

Occupation listed as "Tailor" on daughter Henrietta's marriage certificate; and as "Hatter" on 1881 census.

year of birth: 1851 census gives 1847 1861 census gives 1848 1871 census gives 1848 1881 census gives 1843 1891 census gives 1849

1851 census the family is at: Colledge Street, Troqueer, Kirkudbrightshire, Scotland.

The 1851 census records Andrew Hogg as head of the household, age 23, with: wife Jannet age 29; sister Margret age 13; step daughter Robina Hogg age 7; step son John Waugh age 4; daughter Sarrah Hogg age 0;

The 1861 census has the family living at: 65 Chesterfield Street, Toxteth Park, Liverpool, Lancashire

In 1861 John has the surname Hogg and is recorded as Andrew's son, a "Shop Boy".

On the 1871 census he is married to Catharine from Ireland living at 7 Raglan Terrace, Everton, with two daughers - Andrewina and Henrietta .

On the 1881 census he is married to Elizabeth from the East Indies, living at 24 Phoebe Ann Street, Everton.

John's second wife was Elizabeth Whittaker - a younger sister of Mary-Anne Whittaker (His first wife Catharine's brother Thomas's spouse).

The 1881 census still has Andrewina and Henrietta Hogg-1866 with their father John, but he has a new wife (Elizabeth) and three new children: Elizabeth (4), Wilhemina (3) and Mabel (0). Also in 1881 he has three nieces staying there - Catherine, Lavinia and Margaret Cochrane (daughters of his brother-in law Thomas Cochrane).

"Minnie" is a derivative of Wilhemina, and a "Minnie Hogg" was recorded as a witness on Henrietta's marriage certificate.

Kay Hadikin also remembers her grandfather James Stewart McQueen talking about "Aunty Minnie"

The marriage of John Hogg and Catherine Cochrane took place at the Church of Holy Trinity, St Anne Street, in Liverpool.

I have been unable to find Ramage Street - the address on their marriage record - it may have been in the area of Park Road, Toxteth Park ( see https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/Streets/Street_Changes.pdf ) however the family tended to stay mostly in the Everton / West Derby area.

On the 1891 census John is recorded as a Clothiers Assistant, a widower, aged 42, living at 253 Newlands Street, Everton, Lancashire, with his daughters Henrietta (20), Wilhemina (13), and his nieces Lilly Cockrane (26) and Margaret Cockrane (24) - both dressmakers.

John and Catherine's marriage certificate puts him as 19 in 1866 which would mean he was born around 1847.

John Hogg's occupation is recorded as a "Hatter" both on the 1881 census AND on his marriage certificate.

John's daughter Henrietta's marriage certificate also gives her father as John Hogg, occupation Tailor.

Since John and Catherine's wedding certificate gives John's father's name as Andrew, did he name his first born, Andrewina, after his father? (as was the custom) ... and who was Henrietta named after?

The 1901 Census has John living with his daughter Wilhemina and her husband Herbert Colquhoun. His profession is recorded as Tailors Salesman (Clothier).

Baby John Edward

Due to inconsistencies in the baptism records, initially we couldn't confirm that Baby John Edward was John and Catherine Hogg's son.

(On other records - mentioned above - John's profession is Hatter/ tailor and on this record it simply says 'salesman'. Also, until now, we had seen no other record where John senior is recorded as having a middle name)

However, since the GRO index clearly shows the mother's maiden name was Cochrane it is very likely that baby John Edward is in fact the second child of John and Catherine Hogg.

This would also explain the long gap between Andrewina's birth in 1867 and Henrietta's birth in 1870.

We have since found a death record for a John Edward Hogg aged 55 years in West Derby, in 1904. So perhaps this is John's death, and he did have a middle name after all. Which would lend even more weight to the possibility of baby John Edward being he and Catherine's son.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
