John married first Mary Ashburn, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Sanford) Ashburn, on 30 Oct 1718 at Branford, New Haven, CT - parents of John II, Ashburn, Mary, Phebe, Abigail, Joseph, Lucy and Alitheah Way

After the death of wife Mary he married Phebe Ford, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Elcock) Ford, on 2 Jun 1742 at Wallingford, New Haven, CT - their children were Josiah, Sarah, Abigail, Alethea and Mary Way

He is buried at Broad Street Cemetery, Meriden, New Haven, CT
