Seems to have been mixed up with a family in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Gen. 1 Uriah French of New Jersey married Mary McCullock who by her data was born and died in New Jersey, so would not have been married to a man from North Carolina.
Gen. 2 Samuel French of New Jersey (no profile) married Mary Wayne Nov. 11, 1775 in Pennsylvania (by Pennsylvania records).
I believe that Samuel of North Carolina was married instead to Mary Clark, but have not found definitive research
Biography Mary Wayne of New Jersey

Mary Wayne married Samuel French Nov 11, 1775.(License date)[1][3][4] in the Province of Pennsylvania.[3]
Children of Mary and Samuel:
Sarah French m. 1795 Stephen Corneille (a native of Haiti) in Tours, France[1]
Notes for Samuel French of New Jersey, husband of Mary Wayne French.
Samuel was son of Uriah French, and later was the stepson of Hugh Creighton. He enlisted in the Gloucester County, New Jersey, militia, where he was a long time resident of Newtown. New Jersey records show that May 1, 1784 he was given certificate #517 for the depreciation of his pay as a Continental soldier, during the Revolution. July 16, 1776 he was reimbursed for a coffin for a prisoner. He died intestate (inventory taken Feb. 28, 1812,) in Newtown. His estate was administered by his second wife. Elizabeth, who died about 1813.[4]
The Mary French who married in Pennsylvania did not die in Tennessee in 1820. She died instead in New Jersey, before Samuel remarried.
