Biography

The presumed son of Johann Martin Weatherwax (Weiderwachs) and Elizabeth Hannah Guibey, Jacob was born in New York around 1792. He married Annis Ketchum (1801-1861) in New York around 1811, and Jacob is believed to have fought during the War of 1812.[1] The children of Jacob and Annis included:

  1. John George Weatherwax (1822-1908)
  2. Mary Ann Weatherwax (1824-1825)
  3. John Martin Weatherwax (1826-1896)
  4. Benjamin Ketchum Weatherwax (1828-1864)
  5. Sarah A. Weatherwax (1830-1845)
  6. David Henry Weatherwax (1834-1905)
  7. Maria E. Weatherwax (1836-1837)
  8. William Wallace Weatherwax (1838-1917)
  9. Jacob W. Weatherwax (1840-1902)
  10. Eugene A. Weatherwax (1844-1901)

They resided in Clinton County, New York.[2] The family migrated west to Michigan around 1838 and settled in Scipio Township, in Hillsdale County. Their three youngest children were born there.[3][4]

His wife passed away on December 1, 1861 and Jacob moved to Grandville Township to farm. He served as a Private with Company M of the the 10th Michigan Cavalry; he later joined the Grand Army of the Republic.[5]

Jacob passed away in Grandville, in Kent County, Michigan, at the age of 84.[6][7] He is buried at Grandville Cemetery there.[8][9]

Research Notes

This was a large, extended family. Census records from 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840 exist in New York for Jacob Weatherwax, in different counties, with nothing proving whether they relate to this Jacob Weatherwax. The military record from the War of 1812 and the the 1820 census record from Clinton County, New York are presumed to be his. The parentage may be incorrect; Johan Martin Weatherwax appears to have had a son named Jacob but indications are that he was born in 1787, and that the father lived in Shaghticoke, New York, but indications are that this part of the family lived in Clinton County, New York. Please edit if more reliable proof is located. One branch also migrated to Michigan, settling in Branch County, and their children shared many of the first names that Jacob's children had. Another branch migrated to Lenawee County, Michigan and, again, the children share common first names.
