Patience Weaver, husband of William Wood Jr, is widely assumed as daughter of this couple i.e. Thomas Weaver and Mary Coggeshall, on liternally hundreds of published family trees. However, there are a number of inconsistencies with this parentage as now itemized:
i) The marriage record of Patience Weaver and William Wood is recorded in the records of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, where Patience is said to be "of Swansea"[1], yet Thomas Weaver's family was from Newport, Rhode Island[2]
ii) The will of Thomas Weaver in 1760[3] identified his daughter as Patience Rogers, with no indication of children (yet Patience and William had 6)[4], while Patience the wife of William Wood is presumed dead not later than 1751 as William remarried Susan Petty in 1751.[5]
In summary, while it is clear that Thomas and Mary had a daughter "Patience", it is likely that Patience (Weaver) Wood and Patience (Weaver) Rogers are two different people and Patience (Weaver) Wood is not the daughter of Thomas and Mary.
THOMAS WEAVER was probably born in Newport. He died in Middletown, RI between Aug. 20, 1760, when his will was made and Nov. 24, 1760, when it was proved.
His wife, whom he married by 1715 and perhaps earlier, was Mary Coggeshall, dau. of John and Mary (Stanton) Coggeshall, of Newport. The dates of her birth and death are wanting, but she must have died before her husband as his will makes no mention of her.
Thomas was a yeoman and lived in the north-west part of the town of Newport, until Middletown was established, being one of the signers of the petition June 13, 1743, which resulted in the separation. The rest of his life was spent in Middletown.[6] Among the public duties he performed were those of juryman, constable, surveyor of highways and town councillor.
Thomas and Mary had three children, born in Newport, namely i) Patience b. Apr 14, 1716, m. John Rogers, d. 30 Oct 1790; ii) Mary b. 23 Feb 1721, m. John Dyer; and iii) Thomas b. 6 July 1723[7][8]
Thomas' wife Mary was living March 4, 1739-40, for on that date her mother, Mary Coggeshall of Newport, made her will and her daughter Mary Weaver, wife of Thomas Weaver, Jr., was one of the legatees, and also her daughter Hannah, wife of No. 14, Benjamin Weaver.
March 9, 1752, Thomas' sister, Comfort Weaver, bequeathed him 60 pounds and to each of his three children 20 pounds each, and made him executor of her will.
July 17, 1752, his father nominated Thomas executor of his will and willed him his homestead in Middletown with all the buildings thereon, etc.
Thomas' will was made Aug. 20, 1760, and proved Dec. 15, 1760.[9] The inventory of his personal effects was taken Nov. 24, 1760, and was appraised at (pounds) 7553-17-0, and it appears also that his house contained the great room below, great chamber, garret, kitchen, kitchen bedroom, new bedroom, east new bedroom, cellar, cheese room.
