Biography

The following biography and source list was submitted by longtime Weaver researcher, Jim Bass with the help another long-time Weaver researcher Lee Weaver and Tim Still.

He was 71 years old when the 1850 census was taken; this is how we estimate his birth year as 1779.

  • NOTE 1: There is no proof that Samuel was the son of David Weaver and Massenbird Weaver of Oglethorpe Co., GA.
  • NOTE 2: Some researchers believe his middle name was "L'Orange", but there is no proof of this
  • NOTE 3: some researchers believe he was born in Albemarle VA, but there is no proof of this
  • NOTE 4: It would be great to know why researchers have made these assumption; or perhaps there are records which prove it and need to be brought to light. If anyone reading this has proof and/or documented theories, please share them.

Samuel married Mary "Polly" Patman, 1800 Oglethorpe Co., GA. Her brother John Patman, also married 2 of Samuel's sisters, Mary and Sally, the former dying early in life and the latter being widowed early in life.

Samuel created a will (see attached images) on 7 Oct 1846 in Coweta Co., GA. It was read in probate court on 13 Jan 1851. Since he was listed on the 1850 Census, he must've died in Dec of 1850.

Samuel's will mentions the following children:

  1. Nancy Weaver Philips (1803-1882)
  2. Sarah Weaver Swanson (1806-1855)
  3. Seaborn Jackson Weaver (1808-1850)
  4. Elizabeth Weaver Cheeves (1809-1862)
  5. Andrew Baker Weaver (1813-1893)
  6. Susan B. Weaver Hines Longino (1816-1878)
  7. Mary Martha Weaver Smith (1819- ______)
  8. William W. Weaver b. abt 1823

It is believed had a son named Samuel but he was not mentioned in the will. Perhaps he was the male under 5 yrs old in the 1840 census, and perhaps he did not live until adulthood. Online trees show that he had a son, Dr. David Andrew Weaver 1825-1811 of Putnam Co., GA, but he was not mentioned in Samuel's will, so we need to get proof of this relationship or a well-documented theory of why some researchers believe these relationships existed.

Hi Jim, I sent you a PM about the early tax lists in Oglethorpe that show Samuel near and next to David and his other sons in Oglethorpe. I hope they can be of help.

Thanks Renee - much appreciated! I will add the image to this profile as it does help explain why we believe this Samuel was the son of David of Oglethorpe Co., GA

Glad to be of help! I think the 1805 tax list which shows David paid the taxes for Samuel and a few others would certainly indicate Samuel was his son.
