Biography

By Sarah Anna "Sally" Jones Grooms:

My great grandfather, Philip Lively, came to Nebraska (what would later become Keya Paha County) by covered wagon drawn by oxen from Gillette Illinois in 1880. His five children came with him. His wife, Rebecca, had died the year before. My great grandparents Grandville and Mary Webb came to Nebraska (and to what would become Keya Paha County) from Nevada, Iowa in 1884 by covered wagon. They brought 4 of their 11 children with them. Both families settled in the canyons southwest of what would later become Norden, and the two families became acquainted.

My grandparents, Homer Webb and Anna Lively were married in 1893 in Springview. After their marriage, they travelled by covered wagon into Colorado where they spent five years. Homer worked at cutting ties for the railroad. When they returned to Nebraska, they settled on a homestead 5 miles southwest of Norden. The lived there until 1942 when they moved to a place one mile east of Norden, This made transportation to area towns much easier. Anna passed away in 1948 and Homer in 1960 at the age of 89. They are buried in the Norden West Cemetery.

The three Webb children were born on the homestead. My mother, Viola, was born on June 22, 1901, Carl in 1904 and Blanche in 1906. They all went to school in a small building almost 3 miles from the home place. They either walked or took a horse and buggy.

My mother, Viola, was married to William M. Jones on September 30, 1919. Two children were born to this union, Sarah Anna "Sally" on May 28, 1925 and Wilmer M. Jr. in 1927. Wilmer Jr passed away at the age of two months and is buried in the Norden East Cemetery as is Wilmer Jones Sr. who died in 1969. Viola and Sally lived with the Webbs for several years. When Sally was seven, she started school in Norden. Due to the distance and the only transportation being with horse and buggy, she had to board away from home. This was not easy at seven years of age, but John and Libby Petsel became like another set of grandparents. She boarded there during the 1932-1933 school term and again during the 1933-1934 term.

Viola was married to Bill Anderson on March 3, 1934. They worked on ranches south of Valentine until the fall when they moved into Norden for school for Sally. They spent the next seven years on rented places (this was during the depression) in the Norden area. Shortly after December 7, 1941, they went to Wichita, Kansas, where they worked in the Boeing aircraft plants helping make B-49 airplanes. Viola worked as a riveter, and Bill worked on electric parts. They returned to Springview in 1947 and started Bill’s Saddle and Shoe Shop on Main St. in Springview. They ran the shop until Bill's death in 1958.

Viola was married to Merle Hamilton on February 17, 1960. Shortly after their marriage, they begin operating the Saddle and Shoe Shop and ran it for the next 30 years. Viola sewed gloves, shoes, tarps, etc. for anyone who needed something fixed in a hurry. High school students often brought something in during the noon hour. Many have told me how much my mother was appreciated. Viola passed away on April 18, 1990, at age 89. Merle passed away in 1995. They're buried in Mount Hope Cemetery at Springview.

Sarah Anna "Sally" attended Norden School District number 21 and other schools nearby for the first eight years, and then entered Keya Paha County high school in Springview in 1939. She graduated in 1943 with the Normal Training Certificate and later added hours in Education from Chadron State College. She taught elementary schools in the area for 14 years, although not consecutively.

Sally was married to Russell Grooms of the Norden area on May 28, 1944. He was a rancher, and they spent the next 56 years living four miles northwest of Norden on the place they fondly called Rose Valley Ranch. They raised cattle, and in 1970 they put in center pivots and raised corn under them. It was a busy but happy life.

Their first child, Howard Russell, was born on June 17, 1949. He passed away at the age of two months and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Rhonda Marthena was born on May 29, 1952. Laurene Dawn joined the family on June 17, 1954. An adopted son, Charles Edward, came to the family on May 29, 1962 when he was four years old. On January 7, 1965, twin girls, Tamela Sue and Pamela Lue, were born.

All of the Groom's children attended Norden School through elementary, and then went on to high school in Springview. Rhonda graduated in 1970, Laurene in 1972, Charles in 1978, and Tamela and Pamela in 1983. Boarding in town was no longer necessary due to better vehicles and road conditions, although the two younger girls were the only ones who had a paved road all the way from Norden. They all drove the 48 mile round trip daily. The years of their driving added up to 17 years of worry for the parents. The four girls all went on to obtain higher education.

Rhonda received her Masters degree in education from Chadron State College. She is currently a guidance counselor at Amherst, Nebraska. She is married to Edward Kohel, who is now retired from 40 years of teaching high school music and band. They live near Kearney, Nebraska. They have two children, Scott Edward and Kimberly Ann.

Scott spent 10 years in the Navy and is now employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as a specialist in electronics. He and his wife Della have five children. they live near North Platte, Nebraska where he works.

Kimberly and husband Mike Kling are both taking classes at Kearney College. They have one daughter, Cassey, who is in the seventh grade.

Laurene, who was the valedictorian of her1972 class, attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for one year. She is married to Gary Munger. They live on the Munger home place which is northeast of Springview where they ranch. They have two children.

Brian M, who graduated from University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a rancher. He and his wife Jill live on his ranch northeast of Springview. He is on the Board of Education and helps with youth activities in school and church. He and Jill have six children, Ethan, Kylan, Colton, Keeley, Kortney, and Shane.

Amber LaRae, who graduated from Northwest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and husband Jeremy Grant live in San Antonio, Texas where they both work in finance offices. They have two sons.

Charles was married to Anieta Cole and they had two children, Viola and Chester.

Tammy attended Midland's school of Nursing in Fremont, Nebraska for four years and graduated in 1987 as a registered nurse. She worked at Madonna Center in Lincoln for a few years. Tammy and Jeff Spies of Hooper, Nebraska were married in October 1987. Soon after their marriage they moved to the Sandhills area south of Valentine where he is a ranch manager near Brownlee. Tammy does home healthcare in the area.

They have three boys, Jake, who is a sophomore in in Mullen; Tye who is in seventh grade; and Tell, who is in third grade. The boys are all active in school sports and in rodeo during the summer.

Pamela attended Chadron State College and University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she received a middle school degree in education. She has taught for many years, two years in Springview as well as other schools in the area, Aurora, and Lincoln. She and Jon Peterson, of the Cordova, Nebraska area, were married in 1984. Pamela and the three children live in Lincoln where Pam works at Southeast Community College.

Whitney is a sophomore at Southeast Community College, Austin is a high school sophomore, and Emily Lue is in second grade in a Lincoln school. After Russell's death on January 27, 2000, Sally moved from the home place to be closer to family. She now lives near grandson Brian northeast of Springview. She has 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

There are still three of my generation living. Delmer Smith, son of Blanche Webb Smith who lives in Clearfield Utah; Lois Webb Eberhart, daughter of Carl Webb, lives in Kennewick, Washington; and myself Sally Jones Grooms, daughter of Viola Webb Jones Anderson Hamilton. I have spent all my life in Keya Paha County.

This staff time covers 129 years, from the time I great-grandparents arrived in this area. I remember grandpa Lively. He was tall and slim with snow white hair and beard. He was a kind and friendly person. He died when I was nine years old. Now I live near my youngest great-grandchild, Shane Munger who is 14 months old. Hopefully, family members will live in Keya Paha County for another 129 years.
