Biography

John Webb was born on 10 August 1733 to Jonathan and Priscilla (Bray) Webb in Salem, Massachusetts.[1]

John was a cordwainer by trade.[2]

He married Judith Phelps, daughter of Jonathan and Judith (Cox) Phelps,[3] on 5 November 1752 in Salem.[4]

Children of John and Judith (Phelps) Webb:

  • Hannah Webb, m. James Carroll, 6 October 1772[5][6]
  • Benjamin Webb, b. 3 or 5 November 1759[7][8][9][7][10][11]
  • Elizabeth Webb, b. abt. 1761, m. William Perkins[12][13][14]
  • Judith Webb, b. abt. 1763, m. (1) James Jeffry, (2) James Caley or Kelley[15][16][17][18]
  • William Webb, b. abt. 1765, m. Hannah Allen[19][20][21]
  • Samuel Webb, b. abt. 1769, m. Abigail Palfrey[22]
  • Henry Webb, b. abt. 1771, m. Joanna Burrill[23][24]
  • Stephen Webb, b. abt. 1773, d.s.p. 6 August 1796[25]
  • Thomas Webb, b. July 1776, m. Sarah Kilby[26][27][28][29]

Cooke, in Driver Family, also asserts a son John Webb, who died young, and a Joshua Webb who married a Watson and died before 1799.[30] No record of either has been found.

"18 [May 1811]. John Webb, who died yesterday, was born 1732 & was in his 75 year. He was the youngest son of our Deacon [Jonathan] Webb & is the last of the Children of our Deacons who were in our Church from the beginning. Three sons Jonathan, Stephen & John have died since I have been in Salem & Samuel just before I came & they all have posterity living in Salem. [Rev. Bentley is incorrect, in this instance, about Samuel -- he died in 1810, not just before Bentley arrived in Samuel, as per Bentley's own notes.] John has left several sons & Daughters. He was a man of great prejudice & severity of language, but in his general deportment inactive & inoffensive. Nature had done more for him than he had done for himself."[31]

"26 [May 1811]. Sunday. Notes. Judith Webb & children, d. of her Husband John Webb, aet. 79, & last of the Sons of the Deacons of the Parish Church. Notice was taken of the Office, longevity & prosperity of their families in the Sermon delivered on the occasion from Ezra 8. 13 last Sun[day]. Mr. John Webb was the father of many promising sons. He was severe in his language when he pleased to whet his shafts & was feared on that account. He was a man of more excitability than activity. He could be irritated but not roused to actions. His branch of the family was the only one that in the third generation was not fanatical. [The following are Rev. Bentley's examples of the "fanatical" siblings of John:] Jonathan's Sons lead the Baptist of the first Chap[el]. Stephen, Benjamin & Micah, & Stephen's Daughters the Free Baptists of the lower chap[el]. Mary, Hannah & Deborah who married Murry, Patterson & Kinsman. More brawly creatures never existed. John's sons, Benjamin, William, &c. are with us & are like the man whose place they fill in our congregation."[7]
