Walter Webb was born about August 1848 in South Barrow, Somerset, England. He was the last child of William Webb and Mary Ann Blagdon as his mother died shortly after giving him birth. Walter survived, but it appears as his father had to put him out to an orphanage in order for the infant to survive. Young Walter is found in the 1851 U.K. census in the Union Workhouse, [an euphemism for the poor house], at Wincanton. In the 1861 census, Walter has rejoined his family and is living with them at South Barrow. His father, now aged 59, is an agricultural labourer. Two of Walter's older siblings, Samuel, aged 20 and Mary Ann, aged 16, are both doing the same work as their father. Walter is attending school.
Walter married Kitty Windsor at Queen Camel about Feb. 1873. She was the fifth child and fourth daughter of Job Windsor and Ruth Payne out of their eleven children born between 1839 and 1863, comprised of five girls and six boys. Kitty Windsor's older sister, Jemima had married Walter's brother Alfred eight years earlier.
While Jemima and Alfred stayed in England, Kitty & Walter Webb with their two sons, Alfred John and William Webb, and Walter's older brother, Silas emigrated to South Australia in April 1876. They eventually settled on farms near Halbury, South Australia, not far from John Webb born 1829 South Barrow, Somerset, England.
