Mary Ann Webb was born about May 1845 at South Barrow, Somerset, England. She was the eighth child of nine and the only daughter of William Webb and Mary Blagdon. Mary Ann's mother died shortly after giving birth to her last child, Walter in late 1848 when Mary Ann was only three. Little Walter was put into an orphanage or Union Workhouse, but he did eventually come home.
Mary Ann is found two U.K. census records of 1851 and 1861. In 1851 she is at home with her widowed father, William who is an agricultural worker and two older brothers, Samuel, aged 9 and Alfred, aged 12. None of them are going to school. In 1861, the family is still in South Barrow and there are three children with their father who is still an agricultural labourer. Walter has come home and is now 12 years old and is going to school. The two older children are Mary Ann, aged 16 and Samuel, aged 20. Both of them are working as agricultural labourers.
