In the same 1851 census there is a Mary Ann Webb of the right age, born in Batheaston, working as a servant for John Stodart in the Claremont Bdgs, Monkton Combe, Somerset.[4]
Twerton to Batheaston is about 7.4km, and Twerton to Monkton Combe is about 8.2km - so it is very possible these are the same Mary Ann Webb.
Some time between the 1851 census date (30 March) and the departure of the Navarino (29 June) she makes her way from Monkton Combe to Plymouth. She arrives in Port Adelaide on the Navarino in Sept 1851. She is listed as a 21-year-old servant from Somerset.
[5]
She marries William Blakey Willoughby on the 20th June 1853 in Christ Church, North Adelaide. Mary is given as 24 and single, William as 27 and single. Neither father is recorded.[6] They are both living in North Para at the time of their marriage.
William sets up a blacksmith business in Crafers/Cox's Creek in 1853 and then later moves to Langhorne Creek.
She and William have six children (three in Cox's Creek and three in Langhorne Creek), one of whom (John) dies at the age of 2 years three months in 1859.
Shortly after the birth of their sixth child (Joseph in July 1863), William dies in a horse riding accident just as they were preparing to move again. After the death of her husband in 1863, Mary and her children are left destitute.
