Biography

Edmond Webb was the son and heir of John Webb and Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Nicholas.[1][2]

"Edward Webbe" was baptised on 22 Nov 1612 at All Cannings, Wiltshire, son of John Webbe gent and Elizabeth his wife.[3]

His uncle Oliver Richmond alias Webbe died on 25 Mar 1635.[4] Oliver's Inquisition Post Mortem noted an Indenture dated 10th April, 10 Charles I [1634], made between himself, by the name of Oliver Webbe alias Richmond, of the one part, and William Digges, gent., Edward Nicholas, gent., Benedict Browne, gent., and William Sadler, gent., of the other part. The Indenture referred to Edward Richmond alias Webbe, son and heir-apparent of John Richmond alias Webbe, brother of the said Oliver, and of Elizabeth Nicholas his former wife.

"Colonel John's son, Major Edward, succeeded him as head of the family. We know little of him except that he died in the service of the King about 1645 leaving a widow and family of small children. He was probably about 30 when he died, as he was of age in 1638 when he sold land with his father.[5]

He died about ten years after his Uncle Oliver, who gave him Rod. Cheney and also gave him his buff coat, guilded sword and horseman's pistols to fight for King Charles in the coming war. He only survived his grandmother Kath. St.John by ten years, who gave him my silver bole with the St. John arms on it. Major Edward lived at the family seat of Overwroughton Manor, a large old-fashioned house, a few miles south of Swindon, with two wings in the rear in one of which is an ancient chapel. There is a chest taken from the Spanish Armada and set on end by the chimney, which was used as a safe. His early death left his 6-years old son, afterwards Colonel Edmund, the head of the family. Being left so early without a father's care may explain some of the wild adventures of his youth, when he was known as Webb the duellist.

Hi Gene, do you want to complete the merge?

Done, Steve.

Thank you for your work on this.

How does it look? Should I have accepted the more detailed birth location?

I don't think so. It seems he was probably born in Wiltshire, but we don't have any specific evidence for the location.

Webb-17030 and Webb-7014 appear to represent the same person because: Both appear to be the father of the Edmund Webb / Richmond alias Webb of Rodbourne Cheney c 1639-1795
