Lazarus Webb, Jr. was born 13 Jan 1774 and passed away in 1832. He was born in Virginia.[1]Lazarus Webb, and his brother EIi Webb, moved to Illinois in 1812 and settled in Saline County. Shortly after they moved to the North Edge of Webb's Prairie, Franklin County, which was named after them, and the area was full of wildlife and Native American Indians.
Eli settled on the south side of the prairie and bought land where Webb's Hill is now located for probably a few cents per acre, the deed was from the U.S. government on made on sheepskin. The sheepskin deed was destroyed when the store was burned. There was a dense forest on one side and 8 to 10 feet high prairie grass on the other. It is recorded that Lazarus built the first house on the prairie and gave the prairie it's name. Lazarus never seen fit to change the location of his home and remained on the prairie...and lived there till he died in 1832. He was a Farmer, Surveyor, and a Justice of the Peace.
Lazarus and Eli, with their wives helped found and support the First Primitive Baptist Church. Two of Eli's sons were preachers and preached at this church. Both being ardent and devout Christians, and would go as far as 12 miles east of their home...to attend Ten Mile Church. Both walk and carry a child, going one day and returning the next. There were times they both would ride the same horse with a child in their laps.
The store was burned 23 Dec 1925. It was broken into and the safe blown open. Then the store was set on fire by thieves. [1]
They had few necessities of life and no convences of modern day life. They led a very simple life, and their wants were comparatively limited but their hospitality was unbounded. Their morals were strong and characters above reproach. Both were physically strong for Lazarus lived over 56 yrs. and every year was full of hardships. Nancy, the mother of 16 children and left a widow..when but half of them were grown and yet with all the widow's hardships she faced, she lived to see her baby at the age of 42 years old. She later died at the home of her son, Milton, abt 1868. Out of their 16 children, one died in infancy and one son, John (a preacher), passed at the age of 22 years. The 14 remaining children lived to old age and raised families. Their names are Charles, Sally, Rebecca, Anna, Peggy, Cynthia, Dicey (Dicia Della), Edward, Nancy, Solomon, Franklin, Russell, Milton and Julia. These 14 became worthy and well respected citizens. They grew up and started their lives with the most trying of circumstances. In their own way, one could say they were fairly successful and established homes that are Landmarks of modern day. As well as their lives and ethics are used as role models for their descendants and acquaintances today. Lazarus and Nancy's morality, hospitality, hardiness, and productiveness were so strongly stamped upon their posterity that they seem to have been handed down in retrospect or genes to the many generations, even to the present day descendants. I have some old family photos I'll post next time I come across them. I recognize one of them as Russell, but some of them I'm not sure.
