James Roberts and Elisabeth Webb, the latter charged with stealing four pairs of children's shoes, the property of Edward Macdowell, Esq., and the former with receiving them : both remanded till Tuesday ; Mr. Roberts admitted to bail, himself in £100, and two sureties of £50 each. Mr. Roberts, pawnbroker, and Elizabeth Webb, were finally examined. Mr. Stephen was retained by Mr. Roberts, and after a very long examination was discharged, but Webb committed for trial HOBART TOWN POLICE. (1842, April 22). The Courier (Hobart, Tas. : 1840-1859), p. 5. Retrieved June 13, 2011, from[17]

Mr. Roberts, pawnbroker, and Ann (Elizabeth?) Webb, were examined; the latter on a charge of stealing sundry pairs of shoes, the property of Mr. Macdowell, and the former with receiving the same. It appeared the prisoner Webb had lived as servant at Mr. Macdowell's, and had stolen the shoes and other articles. A female named Worsterfield deposed to the prisoner's calling at her house, and while there requesting her to go to Roberts' and pledge two pairs of shoes for her which she did, and was again asked to perform a similar act of kindness at Mr. Alcock's. Mr. Macdowell gave information to the police of the robbery, and District Constable Symmonds proceeded to Mr. Alcock's who immediately produced the goods which had been pawned with him, he then went to Mr. Roberts who from some inexplicable cause could not remember anything about them, although the woman accompanied Symmonds to identify the shoes. Mr. Roberts was remanded on bail ; the female remanded to gaol. Hobart Town Police Report. (1842, April 26). Colonial Times (Hobart, Tas. : 1828-1857), p. 3. Retrieved June 13, 2011, from [18]

Elizabeth Webb was indicted for stealing, on the 3rd April last, four pairs of children's shoes, of the value of 12s., the property of Edward Macdowell, Esq. The prisoner, who had been in the service of Mr. Macdowell about three weeks, went to a Mrs. Worstfold, in Barrack-street, on the 7th instant, and requested her to pledge three pairs of shoes at Mr. Roberts's, and one pair at Mr. Alcock's ; witness did so, and the shoes were similar to those now produced. Mrs. Macdowell identified the shoes, and stated that the prisoner had access to the store-room, in which the shoes were kept. Mrs. Worstfold being recalled, was questioned by His Honor, and stated that the prisoner, when she asked witness to pledge the shoes, said she would have them back again in a few days for her children, meaning the prisoner's own children, as witness imagined; the prisoner lodged with witness seven or eight weeks before she went to Mr. Macdowell's, and had lodged with her previously; witness had always considered her honest. Messrs. Alcock and Roberts proved the pledging of the shoes by Mrs. Worstfold, on the 7th of April, as her own, property ; both the witnesses had known Mrs. Worstfold for some time, as being in the habit of pledging articles at their respective shops. District Constable Symonds proved the reception of the shoes from the last witnesses, and the causing tho prisoner to be apprehended. The prisoner put in a written defence, which, however, was not read, but which His Honor intimated contained an assertion that the parcel which she gave to Mrs. Worstfold contained pastry, and not shoes. Mr.John Jackson , [license The Caledonian Hotel, Elizabeth street, Hobart Town] who had known her for fourteen years gave her a good character for honesty; she had been in his service four or five months. His Honor, in addressing the Jury, directed them to give the prisoner the benefit of any doubt that might exist, and to take into consideration tho character which had been given to her by Mr. Jackson. The Jury, after retiring for a few minutes, returned a verdict of Not Guilty, when she was discharged, the Chairman observing that he considered her extremely fortunate. His Honor called Mrs. Worstfold, and informed her that he did not know what might be the opinion of his brethren respecting her, but his own was a miserably poor one: he admonished her as to her future conduct, which, if unchanged, was likely to entail a moral curse upon the Colony. A Juror (Mr. Punshon) wished to make an observation, but was informed that the case was disposed of. QUARTER SESSIONS (ADJOURNED). (1842, May 3). Colonial Times (Hobart, Tas. : 1828-1857), p. 3. Benjamin Webb, ticket-of-leave [ex Mary], charged with stealing 5s., the property of Mr. Webb, publican, of Bathurst-street. It appeared that Mr. Webb was from home, and had left his son, a youth of about twelve years of age [William Webb jnr], in charge of the house ; the prisoner went in, called for something to drink, and while the lad was engaged took the opportunity to abstract the above amount from the till ; a constable was sent for, who searched the prisoner and found upon him silver and copper money - one coin which the boy could swear to being among them. We reported a case last week, where Mr. Webb, of the Lamb Inn, in Brisbane-street, appeared to defend the seizure of some 219 gallons of brandy ; through the too great confidence of the informer's counsel, the case was lost, as regarded the police, but the Customs has since laid its grasping paw upon the "stuff," so that poor Mr. Webb will still be minus. A WOMAN BURNT TO DEATH.-Yesterday morning a poor woman, named Mary Dawes, was burnt to death at her residence in Bathurst-street, next door to Mr. Webb's public-house, the Elephant and Castle. There appears some mystery about the case, but we have heard that the unfortunate deceased, who was a vendor of tripe, &c, had become much disordered in her mind since the death of her hunband, and had resorted to drink for an alienation of her affliction. She had, it appears, purchased a bag of shavings the day before, but whether they caught fire accidentally, we cannot say : the poor creature, however, was discovered in a room, where there was no fireplace, literally burnt to a cinder. Maintenance.-Webb v. Webb.-An information by Mary Webb against her husband, William Webb for non-complianoe with an order of Messrs. J. R. Bateman and E. Abbott, justices, 22nd January, 1856, for payment of 12s. a week. Defendant said he had beggared himself by continuing to pay the money, and times having greatly altered he was unable to pay any longer. The Bench said it was a hard case, seeing that according to the present state of the law none but the justices who made the original order could vary it, and in this instance there was no remedy, as both justices were dead. Mr. Tarleton told Mrs. Webb she must be reasonable, and be willing to take what her huaband could afford to pay her.
