Sarah (Webb) Linnell was born in Shropshire, England.

Biography

Sarah Elizabeth "Head" was born on the 14 July 1848 at 56 Listley Street, and baptized on the 23 November 1851 at the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene, at the southern end of East Castle Street, just off High Street, in the Town of Bridgnorth, St. Mary Magdalene Bridgnorth Parish, in Shropshire, West Midlands, England[1][2][3]. Her parents were Edward Webb and Helen "Ellen" Elizabeth Head.

In 1851, Sarah (6) lived with parents Edward (51), who worked as a Constable, and Ellen (40) and siblings Ellen (14), Harriet (12), Charles (10), Frederick (8), Catherine (4 months) and Michael (4 months). Their home was located at 56 Listley Street, in the Town of Bridgnorth, Shropshire, West Midlands, England[4]. However, by 1861, Sarah (14) lived with her grandmother, Proprietor of Houses, Mary (Bodenham/Head) (85) at 46 West Castle Street, in the Town of Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England[5].

Then, in 1871, Sarah (21) worked as a General Servant, with Retired Tailor, Rees (James) (77); his children Emma B. A. (44), Isabella (42), Henrietta (38), Ann (30) and Henry C. (James) (22) and visitor, Amelia (Anderson) (38). Their address is 8 Mornington Road, in the District of St. Pancras, Parish of Pancras, City of London, London & Middlesex, England[6]. Sarah Elizabeth married Wine Merchant, Josiah Linnell on the 19 February 1872 at the Parish Church of Old St. Pancras, Pancras Road (now St.Pancras Way), in the District of St. Pancras, City of London, Middlesex, England. Both Josiah and Sarah were of "full age" and living in St. Pancras at the time of their marriage. After their Banns were published, the couple were married by W. R. (Arrowsmith) in front of witnesses T. H. (Slocombe) and C. (Bliss)[7][8]. During their marriage, the following children were born to them:--

  1. Harriet Louisa (Linnell) Hall, born 13 August 1872 at Camden Town, Pancras, London[9];
  2. Ellen Elizabeth (Linnell) Wadhams, born 27 October 1873; bap. 4 June 1876 at Holy Trinity, Haverstock Hill, Camden Town, Pancras, London[10][11];
  3. George Robert Linnell, born 24 October 1875; bap. 4 June 1876 at Holy Trinity, Haverstock Hill, Camden Town, Pancras, London[12][13];
  4. Betsy Jane (Linnell) Gowar, born 18 September 1877 at Cranbrook, Kent[14];
  5. Sarah Linnell, born Ca. November 1878; died 4 August 1879 at 9 months old; bur. 9 August 1879 at Maidstone Road Cemetery, Chatham, Medway, Kent[15][16][17];
  6. Josiah Linnell (1880-1953);
  7. Catherine "Kitty" (Linnell) Smith, born 1 July 1882; bap. 16 July 1882 at St. John the Divine, Chatham, Medway, Kent[18][19];
  8. Mary Ann "Polly" (Linnell) Gilbert, born between January and March 1885 at Chatham, Medway, Kent[20];
  9. Frederick John Linnell, born between July and September 1886 at Chatham, Medway, Kent[21]; and
  10. Jane "Ginny" (Linnell) Osborn Mattocks, born 11 February 1889; bap. 13 April 1889 at St. John the Divine, Chatham, Medway, Kent[22][23].

On the 19 February 1872, Sarah is living in the District of St. Pancras, London, England. With the birth of their daughter on the 13 August 1872, Josiah and Sarah reside at 24 Leybourne Road, in Kentish Town, northwest London, in the London Borough of Camden, immediately north of Camden Town, in the City of London, England. By the 4 June 1876, he worked as a Wine/Cellarman, living with his wife Sarah and children at 43 Crogsland Road, Chalk Farm, Kentish Town in the City of London, England. With the death of his daughter, Sarah, in 1879, the family resided at 14 Coleman Street, in the Town of Chatham, Kent, England.

However, by 1881, Josiah (38), worked as a Stone Mason in order to support wife Sarah (29) and children Harriet (8), Ellen (7), George (5), Betsy (3) and Josiah (10 months). Their home is located at Ordnance Place, 5 Canon Street, in the Town of Chatham, on the River Medway, in Kent, England[24]. With the birth of his daughter, Jane in 1889, Josiah had changed occupations and now worked as a Cab Proprietor. In 1891, Josiah (47) and Sarah (38) lived with children Harriet Louisa (19), Ellen Elizabeth (18), George Robert (16), Betsy Jane (12), Josiah (10), Catherine "Kitty" (8), Mary Ann "Polly" (6), Frederick "Freddie" John (4) and Jane (Linnell) (2). Mary Ann "Polley" is recorded as being a "son" with a name of Patsey in the Census Record. Their address is still at Ordnance Place, 5 Cannon Street, in the Town of Chatham, Kent[25].

Unfortunately, Josiah (Linnell) passed away in 1898, and in 1901, Sarah Elizabeth (53), now a widow, lived with her children, Cab Driver, Josiah (21), Mary Ann "Polly" (17); Blacksmith Apprentice, Frederick John (14) and Jane (Linnell) (12) at 50 Coleman Street, in the Town of Chatham, Medway District, in Kent, England[26]. By 1911, Sarah, now 60, worked as a Boarding House Keeper, living with her daughter, Jane (Linnell) 22) and Boarders, Francis (42) and Florence Gertrude (Braden) (36). Their address is 36 Ordnance Street, in the Town of Chatham, Borough of Chatham, in the District of Medway, Kent, England[27]. It appeared as if she was still at 36 Ordnance Place, in Chatham, Kent in 1921.

Sarah Elizabeth "Head" (Webb) passes away, at the age of 76, on the 23 January 1925 at 36 Ordnance Place, in the Town of Chatham, on the River Medway, Borough of Chatham, Medway District, in Kent, England[28]. She is interred on the 29 January 1925 at the Maidstone Road Cemetery, in the Town of Chatham, on the River Medway, Medway Unitary Authority, in Kent, England. The location of her grave is in Section: FF; Grave number: 763[29]. The Inscription on the Headstone reads as follows:--In Loving Memory of JOSIAH LINNELL Who Died On The 13th April 1898, Aged 58 Years. "The Morning Comes, we cannot tell, How we may Spend the Day, Death like a Sudden Whirlwind came, And Snatched his Life Away". ALSO SARAH ELIZABETH Wife Of The Above, Passed Peacefully Away 23rd January 1925, Aged 76 Years. "Peace, Perfect Peace"[30].
