Biography

Amy Elizabeth Webber was born in 1876 in Exeter, Devon, England to Samuel Webber and Susannah Scott (Rayment/Raymont) Webber. Her birth was registered in St Thomas, Devon in the second quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Rayment.[1]

Amy Elizabeth Webber, residing at Sandy Gate Heavitree, daughter of Samuel, a farmer, & Susannah Scott, was baptised on 1 Nov 1876 in Heavitree, Devon.[2]

In 1881 Amy Elizabeth Webber (age 4, Scholar) lived at 17 Albert Road in Reading St Giles, Berkshire with her father Samuel (34, Gas Works Labourer), mother Susannah S (39), sister Ada Jane (3), and brother Walter (1).[3]

In 1891 Amy E Webber (age 14, General Servant / Nursemaid) lived at 8 The Mount in Reading in the household of her employer John L Hawkins Jr.[4]

In 1901 Amy Webber (age 24, Housemaid Domestic) lived at 18 Castle Crescent in Reading St Mary with Sarah White (21, Cook Domestic) - their relation to head of household was servant, but nobody else was recorded at the address.[5]

Amy Elizabeth Webber married Albert Frank Ambrose in 1903. The marriage was registered in Reading in the third quarter of the year.[6]

Amy and Albert had six children:

  2. Herbert Francis Ambrose (1906-)
  3. Frederick Ambrose (1909-)
  4. Ernest Richard Ambrose (1912-)
  5. Dora Susannah Ambrose (1917-)
  6. Unknown (died before 1911)

Amy and her husband emigrated to Canada in 1903: A.F. Ambrose (24, Decorator) and Mrs Ambrose (27, Wife) sailed aboard the ship Bavarian which departed from Liverpool, England on 2 Jul 1903, bound for Quebec, Canada - their intended destination was Winnipeg.[7]

In 1906 Ama Ambrose (age 30) lived at 776 Arlington St in Winnipeg with her husband A (28) - five others lived in the same household: Francis Slittle (28), Emily Slittle (27), Frank Slittle (10), Sim Welin (20), and Earnest Pilgrim (20).[8]

Amy and her family returned to England in or before 1909.

In 1911 Amy Elizabeth Ambrose (age 34) lived at 3 Lower Whykeham Road in Reading with her husband Albert Frank (32, House Painter) and two sons: Albert Francis (4) and Frederick (1) - additional details from the record image: Amy & Albert had been married 8 years, and 4 children had been born in their marriage (2 still living and 2 who had died).[9]

Amy E Ambrose passed away in 1928, aged 53 years. Her death was registered in Reading in the last quarter of the year.[10]
