William Webber, son of Edward Webber, was christened 22 Apr 1711 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts.[1]
He married first to Mary Wells, 30 Jan 1733 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Some sources say 1737 in Holland, Hampden, Massachusetts, but some of his children were born before this year.[2][3][4]
With Mary he had the following 9 children:
Mary, ch. 17 Nov 1734 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, d. 7 Jan 1737[5]
Patience, ch. 17 Nov 1734 in Ipswich, Massachusetts[6]
Elizabeth, ch. 10 Oct 1736 in Ipswich, Massachusetts[7]
William, ch. 18 Jun 1738 in Ipswich, Massachusetts[8]
Edward, ch. 24 Nov 1739 in Ipswich, Massachusetts[9]
John, b. 26 Sep 1741 in Methuen, Massachusetts[10]
Joanna, b. 26 Sep 1741 in Methuen, Massachusetts[11]
Benjamin, b. 29 Sep 1744 in Methuen, Massachusetts[12]
Thomas, b. 5 Dec 1746 in Methuen, Massachusetts[13]
He married second to Lucy Kimball, 1 Jan 1754, in Methuen or Wenham, Essex, Massachusetts after registering a marriage notice 14 Dec 1753 in Wenham, Essex, Massachusetts. Again some sources give the marriage location as Holland, Massachusetts.[14][15][16][17][18]
With Lucy he had the following 7 children:
Nathaniel, b. 16 Sep 1754 in Methuen, Massachusetts[19]
Samuel, b. 21 Aug 1755 in Methuen, Massachusetts[20]
Elisha, b. 10 Apr 1757 in Methuen, Massachusetts[21]
Lucy, b. 18 Nov 1758 in Methuen, Massachusetts[22]
Sarah, b. 1 May 1761 in Methuen, Massachusetts[23]
Andrew, b. 18 Feb 1763 in Methuen, Massachusetts[24]
Daniel, b. about 1768 (his marriage records give his mother as Mary Wells, but she would have been deceased by his birth)[25][26][27]
Lorenzo Webber wrote of William Webber in the book Descendants of Andrew Webber, 1763-1845.[27]:
Son of (1) Edward Webber and Patience Hobbs, was born April 22, 1711, in Ipswich, Mass. About 1737 he married Mary Wells, of Ipswich. About 1740 he moved to Methuen, Mass., (a township on the Merrimac River, near the city of Lawrence), as he was taxed there in 1840, his tax being £0 7s Od. In 1760 his tax was £3 5s Id, showing his gain in wealth. He united with the church on -confession of faith in 1743. In 1760 he sold a farm in Pelham, N. H., to his son, William, Jr.[28] His wife, Mary, died June 27, 1753. He married again January 1, 1754, to Lucy Kimball of Wenham, Mass.
After William's death, Lucy, his wife, was in Holland, Mass. (Did he move there before his death?) In 1789 he gives to his son, Daniel (15), a minor, four tracts of land in Methuen, including his mansion and buildings. Daniel (15) mortgages land in Methuen in 1797, so he was then at least 21 years old and must have been born before 1776. It is interesting that in 1799 he mortgages land in Methuen to Samuel Webber, Professor of Mathematics and later President of Harvard College, for security of a debt of $295.
