Biography
James Henderson Weddington was born on 18 Nov 1806 in Russell County, Virginia, United States, to Jacob Weddington and Jane (Presley) Weddington.[1] He was the second of nine children of Jacob and Jane, and the oldest son.
James married Nancy Fletcher supposedly in 1825 in Russell County, Virginia, United States. [citation needed] They had 5 children.
In 1851, James' brother, John T. Weddington, suddenly died at the age of 34. It is not yet known what happened to John's wife, Hannah (Meade) Weddington, during this time. At some point, it is is known that at least John's three younger children (William, Mary, & America) came to live with James and his wife, and were with them in 1860.[2] The older sibling, Jacob, could also have been living with his uncle James, but Jacob was 14 years old when his father passed away, and by 1860 he would have been 23 years old and possibly out of the house by then.
In 1867, James and his wife, Nancy, were involved in a lawsuit with other members of Nancy's family that seems to be involved with property in Russell County, Virginia, probably inherited after the death of Nancy's father, John Fletcher. There were 3 notices about this lawsuit published in the Abingdon Virginian newspaper, on 15 March 1867, 29 March 1867, and 5 April 1867. The same text was published in each:
Abingdon Virginian, 15 March 1867, Friday, page 3.

List of witnesses called to testify: John Shockey Jr, Stephen Ratliff, Nancy Price, James Weddington, Catherine Weddington, Sarah Shockey, Jane Hargis, William Cecil, George Lewis, Mary Sick(?), Abram Damron, Abigail Weddington, Thomas Cain, & Martin Mims.
(Note above: Need to determine if James Weddington in the list above is this James Weddington, or his cousin, James Weddington, son of Henry. Based on timing, this James may not be the witness as he was located in Russell County, Virginia, and not in Pike County yet. Also, the Henry Weddington family knew a Ford family (see profiles for more).)
(Note above: Catherine Jane Weddington married Thomas Hargis in 1833. She went by Jane. There is both a Catherine Weddington and Jane Hargis in the list above. Need more research to determine if same person, different people, conflated profile, etc.)
Nancy "Polly" Ford, plaintiff. Thomas Owens Jr, defendant. Girl born 2 March 1833. Accusing Thomas Owens Jr to be the father. The likely person for the girl is Caroline Matilda (Ford) Huffman, based on birth in March 1833, location of Pike County, and she required a letter of consent to marry (16 years old at the time) from "Nancy Ford".

The 1850 Census has James erroneously listed as "Jacob". His wife and children match with one exception: "John T." is actually "John F.".
