Biography

John Weese UEL of Ernestowne, Lennox and Addington, Ontario [as opposed to Ameliasburgh, Prince Edward Cty - a different John Weese] was born at Schaghticoke NY.

On July 11, 1769, John married Mary Rees (Maritje Reisch) in the Albany First Dutch Reform Church. Their first five children were baptized at this church in Albany: Susanna born January 10, 1770, to parents Hannes Wiesch & Marjnitje Riesch. David born August 23, 1771, to parents Hannes Wiesch & Marjnitje Riesch Johannes born September 15, 1773, to parents Hannes Wiesch & Maria Riesch. Helena 1776 to parents Hannes Wiesch & Marytje. Petrus born February 22, 1778, to parents Johs Wiesch & Maria Rees. John was a tenant farmer west of Pownall (now in Vermont).

John was in Lachine, Quebec with his wife and six children by 1782. In his will dated May 24th, 1815, John gave his son David Wees lot number eleven in the seventh concession of Ernestown Township containing two hundred acres of land.

THE WEESE STORY (ERNESTOWN)

THE WEESE STORY (ERNESTOWN) Ed Weese of Centreville, Ontario remembers an old scroll being in the house when he was a boy. It contained this story, which should be called a legend until it is able to be confirmed. He also showed an old coin handed down to him through the generations, claimed to be from the pirate.

LEGEND has it that the Weese family is descended from an old German family. The first recorded member was an old ocean pirate named William, from along the Weser River, in the 1600s. The name, originally spelled "Wees" means orphan or child needing care.

William's youngest son David joined William, the Prince of Orange, in Holland, fighting in the battles in England and Ireland during the years 1688-1690. After Prince William became King of England, David returned to Holland and settled there around 1695. Some of his descendants later were active in setting up the Wees Meisters Court to look after homeless children. In 1720, David's youngest son James emigrated from Holland to New York State.

Ed Weese continues, "John, the son of James, born in 1742, came to Canada in 1782 with his family as a U.E.L., having joined the Loyalist Rangers in 1780." However, research has not yet proved that John was the son of James.

FACT: In Canada, the original founder of this family signed his name "John Wees". He is on army lists as "Wist", "Wuist", and "West". In New York State, from the Dutch Reformed Church Records, books now sold to the Genealogical Society in Utah, Frances Shelley Wees identified him by the list of his children, but no parentage could be found for him. In these records, he is called "Hannes Wiesch", or sometimes "Weisch".

In the Old United Empire Loyalist List, the following entries are found: David Wuist Ernest Town soldier Gen'l Haldimand 1784 100 A.M.C.L. Loyal Rangers John Wist (Wuist) Residence Ernest Town soldier KRRNY Gen'l Haldimand 1784 100 P.L. 1786 and Captain Myer's Letter John Wist Jr. Residence Ernest Town, Soldier Loyal Rangers muster roll, P.L. 1786 (KRRNY is King's Royal Regiment of New York, commanded by Sir John Johnson, son of Sir William Johnson. The Loyal Rangers were part of the KRRNY as was Jessup's Corps.)

According to Midland District Lands, 1820, John Wees Sr. drew land as follows: p.113 Lot 1 East Half 5th Concession Ernest Town 100 acres Lot 8 all 5th Concession Ernest Town 200 acres David Wees drew Lot 11 7th Concession Ernest Town 200 acres Ed Weese of Centreville says John Wees Sr. got his land by Order-in-Council dated 22/6/1797, but it was John Jr.

William, born in 1779, could not draw his land until he was twenty-one years of age. His application, dated "11th Aprile 1801" was approved on October 27, 1801, by McLean, but for some unknown reason was not sent to the office of the Surveyor-General. A duplicate Warrant Letter U.18 was issued on October 31, 1809. He drew his land in King Township, York County, Lot number 7 in the 8th Concession - 200 acres. (Public Archives Canada, MSS Series R.G.1, L3, Volume 524, Page B.5, No. 36.) By 1878, as shown in the Atlas of York County for that year, it had passed into the possession of George Hill. William Weese, son of William Wees, received by Patent from the Crown 100 acres, Lot 9, Concession 1 in Tyendinaga Township, Hastings County, August 1, 1850. He was apparently a good farmer as, according to the 1851 Agricultural Census, he had twenty-eight acres in crops and kept cows, young cattle, horses, sheep, and pigs.

John Wees Sr. was born about 1742 and died about 1815 (his Will is registered May 1815 and a copy is in the Napanee Land Registry Office). John Wees Sr. married Mary Rees on July 11, 1769. Rees is also seen spelled as "Peet", "Reisch", "Riesch", "Biesch". John Wees Sr. and Mary Rees had the following children: Susanna (1770) married Freeman Burley David (1771) John Jr. (1773) Helena (1776) Ann Germany (1774?) Peter (1778) William (December 5, 1779 - March 24, 1856) married Mary Barnhart (December 8, 1782 - November 17, 1859) Elizabeth Nancy (1789) Mary (1784?).

Susanna (1770) married Freeman Burley David (1771) John Jr. (1773) Helena (1776) Ann Gerany (1774?) Peter (1778) William (December 5, 1779 - March 24, 1856) married Mary Barnhart (December 8, 1782 - November 17, 1859) Elizabeth Nancy (1789) Mary (1784?).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I did the merge however there is a problem with the profile so I sent it back for some research, please. A child's birth date (Wees-25 born 1742) should not be before a parent is six years old (father Wees-27 born 1742) .

Caution: Unusual information. Is the following correct? A child's birth and death date (Wees-25 born 1742 died 1815) should not be before a parent was 13 years old (father Wees-27 born 174
