The son of Henry Wehrle (1829-1902) and Agnes Friedel (1833-1923), Louis was born in Three Oaks, Michigan in 1863.[1][2] Both of his parents immigrated to the United States from Bavaria, Germany, his father immigrating in 1855 and his mother in 1856. He had nine siblings, all of whom were born in Michigan and seven of whom lived to adulthood, included:
The family made their home in Three Oaks, Michigan, where Louis worked as a harness maker.[3] As automobiles replaced horses, they moved to Marshall, in Calhoun County, where Louis found work at a creamery, making butter.[4] His daughter, Loudell, married and she, her husband, and their young daughter, lived with Louis and Mary. His son-in-law worked as a salesman at a shoe store and his daughter worked as an "office girl" at an appliance company.[5] Mary passed away in 1925 and Louis continued to live with his daughter's family. In 1930, he had become the manager of the creamery; his daughter had quit working and his son-in-law worked as a postal clerk.[6] Louis retired before 1940, and continued to live with Loudell and Frank.[7] He passed away in his mid-80s and is buried at Oakridge Cemetery in Marshall, Michigan.[8]
