Johann Peter “Johnny” Weissmüller was born in Freidorf in the Austro-Hungarian Empire on June 2, 1904. [1][2][3] [4] He was the son of Peter and Elisabeth ‘’Kersch’’ Weissmüller.

His parents migrated to the United States while Johnny was young, settling in the Chicago, Illinois area. [5][6]

Swimming Career

Swimming became a pursuit when John was young, and he learned to swim at a beach on Lake Michigan. He competed in local races sponsored by the city and was eventually encouraged to join the Illinois Athletic Club, a premier swim team. He earned a tryout with a famed swim coach, Bill Bachrach, and was admitted to the club. [7]

He began his career in competitive swimming in August of 1921 and set two world records weeks later. In 1924, he competed for the United States in the Paris Olympic Games and won three gold medals for swimming and a bronze medal in water polo. He competed again in 1928 in Amsterdam and added two more gold medals to his collection. He retired from competition in 1929. [7]

Acting Career

His acting career took off when he signed a 7-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to play the part of Tarzan in Tarzan the Ape Man. There were 6 films as Tarzan with MGM, followed by six more Tarzan films with RKO Pictures. Later, he made 13 "Jungle Jim’" films. Aside from the two film series, he had few other roles. Johnny left his acting career behind him after the 1955 television show, Jungle Jim, based on the Jungle Jim films, ended after a 26-episode run. [8]
