Biography

To help prove Ann's parents

George Newlands and Ann Weir first child is a John Newlands From Rathven OPRs 9 APRIL 1806 GEORGE NEWLANDS in Broadley had by his wife ANNE WEIR a Son baptized and named JOHN. Witnesses John Gordon Glasterum and John Weir in Alliloth. [Vol.1 p.221]. Corrected the witnesses should read John Gordon Glasterim and John Weir in Allaloth. This ties Ann to a John Weir farmer in Allaloth in Rathven parish but near Keith mean Ann's mother is an Ann Bennet. John Gordon Glasterim is John Weir's bother in law and Ann's uncle. The original birth date of 1783 may come from another Ann Weir Born in Fordyce, Banffshire. Keith records are not available for this time. George and Ann's second son 22 JUNE 1808 GEORGE NEWLANDS in Broadley had by his wife ANNE WEIR a Son baptized and named GEORGE. Witnesses George Weir in Alliloth & Geo: Wilson? there. [Vol.1 p.229a]. Again points to the Weir family of Allaloth. Their third son 20 MARCH 1812 GEO: NEWLANDS in Broadley had by his Wife ANNE WEIR a Son born on 14th. & baptized this day named JAMES. Witnesses James Gordon Glasteerum and James Chapman in Rye Rigs. [Vol.1 p.244].

Glasterim

Ann was born uncertain. She passed away in 1822.

RESEARCH NOTES

Thanks to Rodney Weir (Weir-4534) - see above - for discovering the witnesses to the christenings of the Newlands children on Charles Flett's website - [1]

Ann Weir appeared in the late David Hendry's (Hendry-1132) genealogy database without a source reference and with an estimated date of birth of 1775. I (Michael Hendry, Hendry-1129) believe that he had evidence of an Ann Weir as a child of John Weir and Ann Bennet, but without a date of birth, and guessed that she was born in the year after her parents were married (1774). Ann was married in 1805 and had her first child in 1806, which would fit with a later date of birth, up to (say) 1885 between her siblings John (b. 1779) and Elizabeth (b. 1789).

The evidence that this particular Ann Weir is the wife of George NEWLANDS (Newlands-408) lies in the witnesses to the christenings of their children, in particular John Gordon of Clashterim (Gordon_of_Clashterim-1) in the case of John Newlands (Newlands-575) and James Gordon (Gordon-18509) in the case of George Newlands (Newlands-576).

Gordon-18509 is Ann's first cousin, and Gordon_of_Clashterim-1 is his father.

Hi, Angeline.

Can you settle a debate I'm having with my third cousin once removed, Rodney Weir?

The date of birth you entered for Ann Weir was 1783, but Rodney's convinced that she's the Ann Weir who was included in my late father's database as being born about 1775, the daughter of John Weir and Ann Bennet. I haven't been able to find any independent evidence that John and Ann had a daughter called Ann, and I wonder if you can tell me where you got the 1783 for "your" Ann? (I haven't been able to find her in the Watt chart you sent me on 2nd June 2021)
