Biography

Daughters of the American Revolution
John Wear is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A120818.
1776 Project
John Wear served with Washington County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

No positive proof that this John Weir is son of Hugh Weir Sr. - there were two John Weirs in the general area, one in Greene County, Tennessee, and the other in Washington County, Tennessee. These Johns died over 30 years apart.

According to "Some Tennessee Heroes of the Revolution" by Zella Armstrong, Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., Baltimore (1975), John Wear applied for revolutionary pension while residing in Sullivan County, TN, in March, 1833. While he was a resident of Greene Co., NC, which later became part of Tennessee, he served in North Carolina troops as follows: From January 1, 1781, three months in Captain John Sevier's company in pursuit of Tories; from the last of August, 1781, three months in Captain William Tate's company. He was in the Siege of Yorktown and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. From the latter part of January, 1782, he was four months in Captain Moses Moore's company, and in Captain Samuel Wear's company stationed at Wear's Fort. John Wear moved to the Mississippi River in 1800 and to Christian County, KY, where he remained only a few months. He then moved to Sevier Co., TN. Tombstone: "Pvt. Capt. Tate's Militia Rev."

There is a "John Ware" listed in DAR records, born 12 January 1741 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, died 17 January 1835 in Sevier Co., Tennessee: Resided Washington Co., North Carolina, service from North Carolina under Captains Sevier, Tate Moore and Samuel Ware.[1]This record shows John's wife as 1st wife as Nancy Moore and 2nd wife as Margaret (Unknown).

According to "Weir/Wear Families from Here to There to the White House" by Olga Jones Edwards & JoAnn Wear Spore (1990), DOD possibly 1800 from one source: John Weir does not appear in the 1801 tax lists for Washington Co., Tennessee; his widow Agness does appear with 177 acres of taxable land. John Wier left a will dated 7 Jan 1800 in Washington Co., Tennessee, proved by oath in August 1800. Thus the DOD is estimated from these facts.
