The famed magician Harry Houdini was born Erik Weisz on March 24, 1874, in Budapest, Austria-Hungary. He came to the United States with his family in 1878.
The family changed the spelling of their first and last names. So Erik Weisz became Ehrich Weiss ... but it's his stage name that defines him even beyond death.
Harry was hospitalized at Detroit's Grace Hospital in Michigan days after his last show where he passed away due to complications from an erupted appendix.
Harry Houdini died in Detroit on Halloween of 1926, but his impressive escapes are still renowned.
