Biography

Susanna was a Friend (Quaker)

Susanna was born about 1665 based on being married in 1686. She is the daughter of William Welch and Sarah Welch.

William Welch and his family emigrated from England to Pennsylvania, having been granted land by William Penn in 1683. The Colonial Records of Pennsylvania recorded Wm. Welch's letter to Penn stating, "I came well to this place, the last 4th day",...signed WM. Welch, Newcastle, ye 18th 12 mo. 1683.[1] Susanna's family was part of the Quakers who settled in Pennsylvania. Her father died in 1686/87.

At a Philadelphia Monthly Meeting held the 26th of the ninth month 1686, Robert Turner declared his intentions of taking Susannah Welch to be his wife, and desired a certificate from friends.[2] At a Newark Monthly Meeting held the 3rd month 1686 [day not legible] at at ye Widow Welsh's at New Castle Robert Turner & Susannah Welsh proposed their Intentions of marriage with each other ye man prducing Certificate from MM at Philadelphia Sign Friends Clearness...Mother being present gave her consent Certificate from ___ being produced.[3]

Susannah was his third wife according to Colonial And Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania. Robert Turner died in Philadelphia, and was buried in the Friends' burring ground on the 24th of August 1700.[4]

Susanna married John Guest Esquire before 1701. On the 20th of October 1701, William Penn granted a certain tract of land called Pilgrim's Place on the Northside of a Branch of Christiana Creek commonly called White Clay Creek in the county of New Castle containing 1,000 acres of land granted by Warrant from myself [William Penn] bearing date the 11th of December 1683 and laid out by order of the Surveyor general on the 6th of April 1685 to William Welch renter deceased leaving behind him Susanna his only daughter of heir the now wife of John Guest Esq. who requesting me to confirm the same to the said John Guest by patent. In consideration of the services all ready rendered and hereafter to be rendered to me in this government by the said John Guest as also in consideration of the quit rent...have given granted released and confirmed unto the said John Guest & Susanna his wife.[5]

In November 1703, John Guest of Philadelphia and Susannah his wife sold to Evan Rice of the county of New Castle in the Territories of the province of Pennsylvania 400 acres of the 1,000 acres originally granted to William Welch.[6] After John's death, Susannah sold the remaining 600 acres of the 1,000 acre tract, called Pilgrim's Place, to John Campbell, Clothier, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[7]

On the 1st day of February 1706, John Guest of the city of Philadelphia set his hand and seal to his Last Will and Testament bequeathing unto his loving brothers, Thomas Guest and Samuel Guest twenty shillings to buy each of them a mourning ring, and unto his loving wife Susanna all his real estate.[8] The will was witnessed on the 22nd of May 1708, and recorded on the 8th of June 1711.

A Deed of Trust for a marriage settlement was entered into on the 2nd day of December 1712 between "Saml Monckton of Philadelphia in ye province of Pennsylvania Apothecary and Susannah Guest of Philadelphia widow ye second part & Joe Pidgon of ye same place mercht & Margart Tench widow of ye third part" in consideration of a marriage that was shortly to be had or solemnized between Monckton and Susannah. The instrument concerned all the messuage or tenement situate in Philadelphia now in the possession of ye said Susannah Guest with a lot or piece of ground described as two houses & lotts of ground in Chesnett Street granted by Jacob Coffing to Joshua Carpenter & Wm. Trent of Philadelphia.[9]

Based on a marriage settlement on the 10th day of June 1719 mentioned in Samuel Monckton's Last Will and Testament written on the 27th day of August 1720, Susannah died before June 1719.[10] No children were mentioned in the will.
