Biography

Birth and Parents

John Welch was born in Massachusetts.

John, the son of Maurice and Mary A. (Lane) Welch was born on 30 January 1854 at Boston, Massachusetts.^[1] His parents emigrated from Ireland.

In 1860, John, 6 years of age, was living with his parents, Maurice (38 years, occupation laborer) and Mary A., 38 years, both from Ireland and John's siblings, William (11 years), Elisabeth (10 years), Maurice Jr. (8 years), Michael (5 years) and Thomas (2 years) at Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts. John and all of his siblings were born at Massachusetts.^[2]

Marriage and Children

John married Nellie McIntire, the daughter of Joseph Franklin and Elizabeth Ann (Dickey) McIntire on 17 May 1883 at Manchester, Hillsborough, New Hampshire.^[3]John worked at the Noyes Comb Factory for over 20 years, retiring in 1928. John and Nellie had six children:

Census Records for 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930

In 1900, John, 45 years of age, occupation comb maker and wife Nellie, 35 years of age had been married for 17 years. Living with them were their five children; Mary (17 years), Emma (10 years), Nellie (8 years), Lucille (3 years), and Cora (1 year) at Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts.^[14]

In 1910, John, 55 years, working at a comb shop and Nellie, 44 years, had been married for 26 years and were living at Newburyport, Massachusetts. Residing with them were their children Emma (19 years, telephone operator), Nellie (17 years, comb shop packer), Lucille (13 years), Cora (10 years) and Henry (7 years).^[15]

In 1920, John, 67 years, occupation 'horn sawyer at a comb shop,' and wife Nellie, 54 years, occupation 'Forelady at a Show Factory' were living at Newburyport, Massachusetts with their children Cora (21 years, public school teacher) and Henry (17 years).^[16]

In 1930, John, 77 years of age and Nellie, 65 years of age were residing at Newburyport, Massachusetts with their two youngest children, Cora (30 years, public school teacher) and Henry (28 years, no occupation listed). ^[17]

Death

John H. Welch died on 28 September 1933 in his 80th year at Newburyport, Essex, Massachusetts where he, his parents and siblings, and his wife and their children had been living for over seventy years.
