For the interest of other Huddleston researchers ... the following is
paraphrased from sworn statements of three 1896 applications for
membership in the Cherokee Nation of Indians made by Margaret E.
Huddleston, Joseph G. Huddleston, and George Ann Huddleston:
That the Indian blood is derived from Peggy or Margaret Welch their
great-grandmother who married Ben E. Huddleston their great-grandfather
and who was a Cherokee Indian by blood. By direct lineal descent as
follows: from Margaret or Peggy Welch married to Ben E. Huddleston, to
their son Joseph S. Huddleston, thence to his son Andrew J. Huddleston
who was the father of the claiments listed above. The said Peggy Welch
was a Cherokee Indian woman and a recognized member of the tribe. She
married Ben E. Huddleston in North Carolina and their son Joseph S.
Huddleston lived with the Cherokee Indians in Tennessee and Alabama as a
member of the tribe previous to their immigration to the West.
