Harriet Elizabeth was born August 7, 1851. [1] She was also known as Hattie. She grew up on a farm in Henderson County, Illinois. Hattie was the daughter of John Welch and Mary Lathrop. Her father was a successful farmer and Hattie's uncle, Charles, worked the farm with her father. Her mother kept the house. Hattie was the oldest of 5 who were mostly girls. Hattie had one brother. Hattie married Samuel Reed on February 13, 1871 in Henderson, Illinois. [4] Samuel was a school teacher. In 1880, Hattie was keeping house with her 2 sons, Franklin and James, at home. Her daughter, Julia, was in school. [5] Over the next 10 years they had 5 more children: Mable, Clara, unknown, Lela and Vincent.. One was not listed in census records but included in the count of "5 of 8 children living in 1900" from the 1900 Census. Two of them, Clara and Lela, only lived a few years. [6]
Hattie's husband, Samuel died on November 24, 1907. [1] Three years later, Hattie was living in Monmouth Township, Illinois with another widow, Martha, who was 10 years older than her. They were listed as partners and mutually owned the home free of mortgage. It was house number 213 but the street name was not listed. Hattie was listed as having 5 children and Martha had 3. All 8 children were still living in 1910. [7]
In 1920, Hattie was living on Clara Street in San Antonio, California. Two of her daughters, Mabel and Juliet, were living on the same street. Mabel's home was nest door and listed as a farm. She was married to Walter G. Bishop, a bank employee working in the mail department. He also filled out farm schedule 49. Mabel had 2 children: Reed 6 and Ruth 4. Next door to Mabel lived Hattie's daughter, Juliet. Juliet was married to a minister, John M. Brown. John and Juliet had 3 children:, Mabel Ella, 17; Maurice Jas, 13 and Merwin R, 10. [8]
Ten years later Hattie was living with John and Juliet Brown and her 2 grandsons. John owned their home valued at $7,000. It was located in Los Angeles, California. [9]
Harriet "Hattie" Elizabeth Welch Reed died on September 29, 1930 and was buried in Reed Cemetery, Henderson County, Illinois. Samuel and Hattie's marker[1]
