Biography

James Welch, fourth child of James Welch, was born in Rehoboth, Massachusetts Bay. James was baptised together with his brothers and sisters on 29 March 1702 at the First Church of Christ in Bristol, Rhode Island, just across the bay from Rehoboth. [1]

This profile's James Welch is not same person as James Welch, son of James Welch and his wife Mercy Sabin, who is related to Mayflower descendants. The two James Welches are conflated even in an otherwise informative genealogical work such as Descendants of James Welch. [2]

In 1702 James removed with his family to Plainfield and then to Voluntown, where his father James Welch Senior had been granted land as a veteran of King Philip's war. [3]

James was married to Penelope Thrall. They had several children, amongst whom the following two sons mentioned by name in James Welch's will:

  1. Joshua Welch, born about 1715 in Colchester, New London, Connecticut. [4]
  2. William Welch, b. abt 1721.

James Welch's earmark for his cattle is recorded on 6 January 1738/9 in Colchester. [5]

On 7 June 1756 James Welch drew up his last will and testament, wherein he mentions by name sons Joshua and William. [6]

James Welch died after 7 June 1756 in Voluntown, New London, Connecticut Colony. [7]

Anne, thanks for the comment, but i truly cannot follow it. I donot understand what you mean by <This James need to be disconnected from Mercy Sabin Welch but perhaps the father could be used for James Welch his father>. I do see that i created this profile (twice over!) because of some problem with the other profile for James Welch (which i had also originally created). (See this profile's Acknowledgements Section). I no longer remember, howevr, what the problem was. Certainly this profile's James Welch is the fourth child of James Welch and Mercy Sabin (see the reference images at this profile.) All that is contained in this profile is taken from the available sources. I no longer remember why this profile had to be created, but i see that the other profile for James Welch also has as his parents James Welch and Mercy Sabin! (perhaps created later). Right now i am busy with an important genealogical research for the sons of my recently deceased half-brother (died in July 2021): a couple weeks before his death he finally did a DNA test. The results were recently ready, and yesterday, based upon his DNA matches and their intersecting trees, i was able to determine who his father was; I am now busy with creating an accurate paternal tree for my deceased brother, as it was important for him that his sons and grandsons should know this. So perhaps Bobbie Madison can take a look at your comment and try to understand what is meant, and what to do regarding it. Thank you! Albertus. PS. I am a blood descendent of this profile's James Welch on my mother's side. PPS. I now see in the Profile HIstory that the parents of my James Welch (of this profile) were added today by John Crandal. Is this the problem? I did not add the parents, and i cannot at this time investigate why they are or are not his true parents.

Postscript: i have now detached the recently incorrectly added mother Mercy Sabin. I had already added a note when creating this profile that this profile's James Welch is not to be confused with the other James Welch, son of Mercy Sabin. I shall make the note even clearer, so that noone attach her again as mother to this profile.

The source attached is confused. It's conflated James Welch (1692-bef.1770) and James Welch II (bef.1702-aft.1756). They are two separate people with different sets of Children and different sets of parents. Mercy (Sabin) Welch (1666-1728), Mayflower descendant) is the mother of the other James (1692-1770) according to the Mayflower Society. Both James' seem to have father's named James, but not the same men. Hence you could leave the profile for this James father attached and redate the profile instead of merging it with the husband of Mercy Sabin. I hope that's clearer.

Anne, thank you for answering. If i understand correctly, the mother added today by John Crandall should be detached from this profile, and as wife from the James Welch attached as father to my James Welch (this Profile). (Then someone else would have to merge her with the other Mercy Sabin). I should then keep James Welch as father of my James Welch (this profile) but redate the profile. Do you know the dates of birth and death of my James Welch's father James Welch? That would make it easier for me. Thank you!

Postscript. UNFORTUNATELY, i just see that the two profiles for James Welch Senior have been merged. I donot know whether the merged James Welch is this profile's father, or the father of the other James Welch, or a combination of the two. I have now detached the recently added father as well, and shall create a new profile for his father James Welch with the little information that i have (i.e., King Philip's War), in order to forecome the attaching of the old James Welch Senior once again.

Thank you Albertus. It looks correct now, at least from the Mayflower Project standpoint. And unfortunately I don't have any more information on the father.

This is of little or no value, but: James Welch's earmark for his cattle is recorded on 6 Jan 1738/9 in Colchester.
