Cashel:- In 1872 the township of Dookie South was surveyed on a site that was too rocky for farmland on the slopes of Mount Major where freshwater springs were located. In 1873 the name was changed to town of Dookie. In 1876 the name changed again and was called Cashel as many of the residents of the town and district came from Cashel in Ireland. Cashel was an overnight stop for the coach service that ran between Shepparton and Benalla and there were several hotels to choose from to stay in. Cashel went into decline when the present site of Dookie was chosen for a railway terminus. The new town of Dookie was established in 1888. Most of the important services gradually moved to Dookie. Very little remains of Cashel remains these days.
