Biography

Benjamin Wellington is an Indigenous Australian.

Benjamin Peter Wellington was a son of Arthur Wellington and Mary Ann Rodgers, who had his birth registered in 1888. His WWI Service Record has the specific birth date as 6 October 1888, and location "near the town of Toongabbie", with his age as 29 yrs 1 mth. His occupation was a Stevedore. His wife was Norah Ellen Wellington and they were living at 13 The Avenue, Coburg, Victoria. He had previously served for 8 years in the 13th Light Horse, Gippsland, and been discharged for family reasons. The form was signed on 23 October 1917 and he joined up on 30 October 1917 in the 4th (E) Light Horse. His service no. was 4103.

Benjamin Peter Wellington had married Norah Ellen McGannon, with the marriage registered in 1909 in Victoria. The specific date 20 May 1909 and location Elsternwick, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia is given in the Ancestry FT[1] that is the source of his photo.

Benjamin Peter Wellington and Norah Ellen Wellington are both on the Electoral Roll at Toongabbie South, Gippsland, with Peter as a Farmer and Norah Ellen doing Home Duties in 1909. They are still on the ERs for 1913, 1914 at the same location, where his brother George is also on the ERs as a Farmer, but only Benjamin and George are on the ER at Toongabbie South in 1915. In 1916 and 1919, Benjamin Peter and Norah Ellen are on the ER at 13 The Avenue, Coburg with Benjamin as a Stevedore and Norah Ellen doing Home Duties. However, in 1921, they have moved north of the Melbourne region to Watson Street, Seymour, where Benjamin gave his occupation as a Soldier. The same in 1922 and 1925 but with a move to the High Street, Seymour in the latter, where they are also on the 1927 ER. By 1928 they were back in Coburg at 59 Harding Street with Benjamin giving his occupation as Carpenter. In 1931, back to Gippsland, to Glengarrie, in the subdivision of Toongabbie, again as a Carpenter. George is still listed as a Farmer and there is also a Frances Grace Wellington doing Home Duties. In 1943, Benjamin is a Boilermaker at 10 Argyle Street, St Kilda West, with Norah Ellen. Australia, City Directories, 1845-1948 fill in some of the gaps from 1922 to 1942.

Benjamin enlisted again in WWII but under the name Benjamin John Wellington, according to the Ancestry transcription of his record, with the same birth date and location; next of kin: Nora Wellington, and was given service no. V81418.

Benjamin and Norah had 7 children, with his wife and 4 of the children surviving his death aged 56 that was registered in 1944 in Victoria. The same Ancestry FT has the specific date as 3 October 1944 and the location as Elsternwick, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It adds that he was buried in the Fawkner Cemetery, which is in Melbourne.
